You may be planning how you want to design a room in your home. You have considered paint colors, furniture placement and window and floor coverings. Have you thought about your lighting? It can be an important decision to make. Ceiling lights can add so much to your room and the statement it makes. Here are a few things to take into consideration when choosing your lighting scheme as well as what some of your options are.

The first consideration is how much of a commitment you want to make to your lighting. Are you interested in replacing an existing fixture, or are you willing to add fixtures? This narrows down what your choices are. Many homes do not have ceiling lights in some rooms so you may find that you will need to wire in new fixtures anyway. It is fairly straightforward to replace an existing fixture but adding new wiring is often something that you should let the professionals handle. Of course, this can add to your costs, so it is something to take into consideration.

The room that the lighting will be used in is also an important consideration. Special lighting may be required in a room like a bathroom which has high humidity. Another place that may need specific lighting is a kitchen. If you are lighting a room where certain areas will be used for routine tasks, you should make sure your lighting system illuminates these well.

If you have a room where specific tasks are being completed, you should consider track lighting. These have several fixtures positioned along a track. Some track lighting allows you to move the lights along the track and others simply allow you to swivel them in different directions. This allows you to illuminate specific areas and also provide a more general light in the rest of the room.

Some people prefer the low profile look of recessed lighting. This is lighting which sits in something called a can. This can is recessed or stuck up into the ceiling and the light is flush with the level of the ceiling. The light can rotate inside the can and be directed at specific areas, such as a piece of artwork. Planning is important with this kind of lighting since you will be cutting holes in your ceiling to install them.

Ceiling fans are also available that serve multiple purposes. There are a range of fans which also incorporate one to three lights. They are good because they can circulate air and help keep a room cooler or warmer depending on the preference of the owner. They help regulate temperature and provide lighting while helping keep energy costs down.

Once the lights are installed, you now have to think about light bulbs. Many lights use specific bulbs, such as recessed lighting. They are designed to use a small bulb which sends out a clear, strong light. The most common types of light bulb are fluorescent, halogen and incandescent. Some give off light which is warmer, with yellow undertones, and others give off a colder light which is bluer in color. This can make a difference with respect to wall color. As well, you should make sure that the bulbs you choose are easy to replace and widely available so you are not searching around when they do eventually burn out.

Your choice of ceiling lights can really add to the overall design of your rooms. It can make a room feel more welcoming and easier to live and work in. By doing your research you can find the lighting style that works well for you.
