Having knowledge of how to increase internet traffic without burning our credit cards and freaking out our nearest and dearest is an attractive goal. Once we have our site and blog built, without visitors it's like we set up a corner store in the desert. So where does the traffic come from?
I will take it for granted that you have your online 'real estate' in place, and that you've discovered that your niche has good demand and lots of attractive keywords, and that you have an opt-in form set up on a blog and/or squeeze page to capture subscribers into your autoresponder account - but how we then add content will have a big impact on our traffic moving forward.
If you want to know how to increase internet traffic quickly - which isn't quite the same question - then I recommend you study some Pay per click materials by marketers like Jim Yaghi or Perry Marshall and then start cautiously - with plenty of testing and tracking.
To do this more affordably - set up your squeeze page to have a 'One Time Offer' behind it. The occasional sale from these will do wonders for your ROI. Michael Rasmussen is particularly good on this subject.
If you don't want the injection of quick ultra-targeted traffic - with the accompanying adrenalin rush of risking real cash - then you can still increase traffic but you'll need a little more patience.
These are the best free methods I've come across for building targeted traffic:
1. Submit articles to top article directories such as ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, articlesbase.com, searchwarp.com and isnare.com. Aim for a length of between 400 and 600 words, keyword optimised, with links back to your site embedded in the 'bio box'. Use the keywords in your anchor text.
2. Regular blog posting. If you have a blog (heartily recommend Wordpress.org) then post at least two keyword-optimised posts per week. Use Wordtracker or the Google Keyword Tool for keyword research. You can use the same articles as your directory submissions, whatever anyone says! Your blog posts can have links in the text that send readers to relevant squeeze pages.
3. Blog commenting. Write helpful and insightful comments on other (relevant) blogs with a link back to your site. Do this every day.
4. Forum posting. Contribute to relevant forums with authentic contributions (ie not 'great post. Thanks') and make sure you add a 'signature' that links back to your site.
5. Social bookmarking. Add bookmark buttons to your own blog posts and bookmark other sites that you genuinely like.
Most people who want to know how to increase internet traffic over time simply don't do these things consistently. They might realise it's good practice but the weeks and months go by and nothing gets done. So what's the answer?
