Ever since then, roses have been used to grace special events such as parties and other special events. In fact, roses, in Egypt, are sacred flowers that were offered to gods, goddesses and were made into wreaths for dead Egyptians. The War of Roses which first took place between 1455 and 1487 in England were a series of dynastic wars of the Royal House of Plantagenet, the Lancaster and York, claiming for the throne of England. The French on the other hand, showed their passion to the flower through their literature, particularly poetry.

Today, roses have continued to gain popularity more than ever. Rose farms throughout the world abound as some are historic that represent the past and remind both the present and our children and grandchildren of the toils and achievements of some individuals who unfailingly labored so that rare rose varieties survive several of Civil Wars, the Great Depression and two World Wars.

A 14-acre testing garden, the Tyler, Texas Municipal Rose Garden opens all throughout the week from dawn till dark showcases both antique and heritage and the newest varieties of roses. Visitors are treated to a breathtakingly mesmerizing field of over 38,000 rose bushes of a minimum of 500 different varieties, colors and sizes in full bloom during spring time and mid-October. Among the bushes features are miniature being a dime while the grafted varieties are taller. The spectacular varieties of David Austin roses that prominently feature the multi-petal formation which are reminiscent of the traditional English rose garden and the Heritage Rose and Sensory Garden of over 50 varieties of heritage or antic roses is something that the garden takes pride in.

The Berkeley Municipal Rose Garden which stood since The Great Depression which provided work for the unemployed during such difficult times of the American economy features about 3,000 bushes of over 250 rose varieties. The garden was constructed in the form of a terrace nestled in a tiny canyon that yields a magnificent inspection of the San Francisco bay and the Golden Gate from the wide stone terraces. A component of the garden called Codornices Park, built with picnic tables and childrens play equipment remind guests of the early entrepreneurs of the Codornices creek selling water from it.

The preservation of heritage roses and development of new rose varieties only connote the importance of roses to our culture and history as a nation of flower lovers. The generations of today receive the responsibility to uphold the long-held tradition of taking care of these roses and continue to imbibe it into the rich culture of flower enthusiasts due to the hard work of those whose lives were devoted to its preservation.
