This article is for newbie in SEO or for a web designer to know. A little light on how do Search Engines decide on what should appear in natural/organic search results

This is something very important: To get high ranks in the natural search results, you cannot pay the search engines. High rankings can only be possible when the relevancy of your content matches with the search in the search engines.

A search engine usually sends out spiders and robots which do the crawling or analyze your website and records/index its respective details. This helps the search engines to figure out the relevant content for the search on their search engines. This is the time when complex algorithms play their roles by determining that your site is relevant and useful for the search to be displayed in the search results of the search engines.
Now is the time where SEO plays a vital role

Results of Search Engines

What concerns the most to search engines like Google is whenever there is a search; the results of the content should be relevant which shall drive in more traffic. Ultimately, this generates more revenue through advertising. In other words it means, whenever there are searches, the results should be relevant. This is how the search engines prefer to return results with relevant content for the search.

You must have observed, whenever you click search, the results which comes on the screen are mainly of two types which are as follows:

1) Natural: This is the "actual" search result. The results which are displayed here are the most relevant results which a user is looking for. These consume most of the window as it is a long list of results which a user has searched for. There are number of sites displayed and it is ranked as per the relevancy and importance of the keyword for the content put into the search.

2) Pay: This is called "absolute/paid" advertising. Here is where, the search engines are able to make their most of the money. Companies or advertisers pay a certain set of money at regular intervals to display their ad whenever a user searches for their kind of product or service. These results usually consume a very least part of the window and appear as a natural result. You will find these ads under "Sponsored links".

It is commonly found that when people are finding the content while using search engines, the attention goes more towards the natural (which is also called organic) results. The other results which are mentioned above are the paid results which do not carry that much importance as users know that the natural results are more relevant than the paid ones as these are just simply ads (Under sponsored links).

Here, we are discussing and sharing more on the search engines ranks and how to achieve good rankings naturally in the natural search results. Hence, Sponsored links topic is not covered here.
