A rather versatile price of furniture is the desk. A desk typically has a section that functions as a table and then also contains a storage area. Desks tend to be used for writing or computer use. Most items stored in the desk are stationary, office supplies and other items of business. Desks will have the drawers to one side and the table on the other so a person can sit underneath it and have access to everything.
There are several types of desks besides this more classic table style. A portable desk is very much just like a board that can be put on your lap and used when travelling. You can find an armoire desk inside your wardrobe and this desk does not have a table. Desks became very popular when paper and typing became a main staple of the business place. This occurred mainly during the 20th century. Most of these industrial style desks are built for strength and can easily carry a typewriter and reams of paper. They also contain plenty of storage for files. The most common was made in an L shape in order to have a place to s tore your typewriter.
With the invention of the photocopier after World War II desks became used even more. Since office space was beginning to get more expensive desks were designed to fit several people and use space the most efficiently. Most of these types of desks were mass produced pieces constructed of plywood and covered fibreboards.
Students traditionally use desks as this is where students will do their school work. Student desks are very popular and tend to be very compact and able to fit in small spaces. Think of how much furniture goes into a dorm room. Student desks are like pedestal desks and you can have the table section on either side depending on your preference.
A style of antique desks is a Bargueno desk. This desk originated during the Spanish renaissance during the 15th century. The desk is basically a box or chest that has a side flap that can be opened to create a table like space. Inside the box are drawers and pigeonholes that can be used for storage. The desk was easily moved as there were iron handles on each side, making carrying easy.
A desk made specifically for ladies was the Bonheur du jour which was created in Paris. This desk was mainly for writing and was first created in 1760. It was the height of fashion at the time and was decorative and very light. The desk had a raised back that formed a small cabinet and there was a drawer in which writing supplies or items such as toiletries could be stored.
A more modern type of desk is a credenza desk which is used as a secondary surface in offices. This desk is typically found in executive offices and is placed up against a wall. The credenza desk is not used frequently but may contain books or other supplies that are needed occasionally.
