When we start to feel anxious in our lives, our bodies let loose hormones that can make us react to any kind of danger, whether genuine or not. If our anxiety starts to get out of control our response can happen even at times when we appear to be calm. Doctors and researchers do not fully understand the reasons for why this happens, which means the cause of generalized anxiety disorder is still unspecified.
But there are a number of scenarios that can play a part in causing anxiety disorder. Certainly one of these causes is having to cope with health problems. Having to deal with a serious health problem like cancer, can make you anxious. Such major health problems can be overwhelming and can set off excessive anxiety because of all the worry and doubts about the outcome of your diagnosis and treatment.
Family and relationship problems and the general stress of daily life are other causes of anxiety. If you have a hectic life or are faced with specific situations that are stressful in your life, then this may set off a bout of anxiety. Anxiety disorders can occur more in people with chronic illnesses like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Sometimes you can have a physical illness which will cause you to have an increased level of anxiety. There are conditions such as an overactive thyroid gland that can produce anxiety along with further signs and symptoms. And heredity can also play a part in having an anxiety disorder. Occasionally genetics can play a part in anxiety disorders, because it can run in the family.
Your personality type, e.g. being very shy, can make you more inclined to developing an anxiety disorder as you are inclined to worry more about what people think about you. People in a stressful relationship feel less secure which places them at a higher risk for developing an anxiety disorder.
All of these risk factors collectively can increase your chances for developing an anxiety disorder. These risk factors can increase the amount of stress in your life and can create more anxiety. If you have or have had a serious illness then you are at risk to have an anxiety disorder. A serious illness can worry you continually because the uncertainty about your health may cause you to worry about getting ill again in the foreseeable future.
