Many individuals say they would like to become a writer and actually earn income doing it. It's possible, but only when you make the effort and do the work. Becoming a writer is like becoming a violin player. Don't forget the ancient joke about the way to get to Carnegie Hall. Practice! And do not let anything get in your way. Just like music practice or physical exercise or anything that is worthwhile but difficult, it is easy to create excuses not to try and do it. Here are five huge pitfalls to steer clear of:
1) Saying you are too tired. Everybody is tired. You have a job plus a family and all the other pressures of everyday living to contend with? Who doesn't? People who are keen about what they do are excited by what they love. They are not "too tired" to do it. Too tired is an excuse for individuals who actually do not care that much about it.
2) Waiting for inspiration. If you wait for inspiration, you could possibly be waiting a long, long time. What do professional writers do when they aren't inspired? They write anyway. Just choose a subject and begin to write. Even if you are able to only think of the most mundane things to write. Prime the pump, ideas will come. Activity begets ideas.
3) Putting the blame on agents, editors, readers, critics, and so on for you minimal amount of success. It may seem like life isn't fair and typically it isn't. Your finest story or report may be rejected, perhaps more than once. Submit it once more and if it still does not sell, compose yet another one. Just bear in mind, there's loads of junk being published all of the time and your writing is most likely far better than much of it. Grow a thick skin and get writing.
4) Saying you will do it tomorrow. No! No! No! Tomorrow is for losers. Writers create just about every day! Make it a practice to fill at the very least one page or article a day. One page won't take too long and soon the habit of producing will become a habit. You'll do it just simply because it is a habit and at one page each day you could have a 365 page novel done in a year. Don't forget, write every day!
5) Thinking you're much too old or too young to start. This excuse is just absurd. If you have an idea and the ability to put words on paper or into a laptop or computer, you are able to write. Your reader does not care how old you are, he really just wants to be informed or entertained or whatever your particular writing is intended to accomplish. Don't even think about trying to get away with the too young or too old excuse.
If you want to become a writer, a fiction writer, a blogger, an article writer, a copy writer, or whatever, then write. That's what writers do. You should never make excuses. Write, practice, get better and fulfill your passion.
