Sariska is probably one of the most visited national parks in India. There are a lot of attractions seen here and near the national park.

About Sariska National Park

Sariska Tiger Reserve is situated in the district of Alwar district within the Rajasthan State, India. This tiger reserve is one of the famous national parks in India. The total coverage area is about 866 square kilometers.

Several of the wildlife seen in the Sariska Tiger Reserve are four horned deer, wild boar, langur, caracal, sambar and chital. It also includes jackal, hyena, jungle cat, leopard, Bengal tiger and some species of birds. This national park s tiger population almost disappeared in the year 2005. However, after some sustained efforts by the Rajasthan state government and WII or Wildlife Institute of India, the disaster was averted.

In addition, the Sariska Tiger Reserve is the place of numerous sites including the Garh Rajor Temple and Neelkanth Temple. The 17th century fort of Kankwadi is situated close to the center of the national park wherein a Mughal Emperor named Aurangzeb temporarily incarcerated Dara Shikoh which happens to be his brother in the fight for the Mughal throne succession.

This area has historical structures associated with Maharajas of Alwar including the Sariska Palace. This palace was used as the royal hunting cabin of the famous and legendary Maharaja Jai Singh. Tourists could visit the Sariska Tiger Reserve throughout the year but the best time to go is during the months of October through June.

The 17th century castle of the jagged hilltop at Kankwari gives a panoramic sight of flying eagles and Egyptian vultures. This area was declared as sanctuary in the year 1955. It became a national park in the year 1979.

Wildlife in Sariska Tiger Reserve

The Sariska Tiger Reserve is home to a large number of carnivores including tiger, jackal, hyena, jungle cat, wild dog and leopard. There are also several herbivores in Sariska Tiger Reserve such as langur, wild boar, chausingha, nilgia, chitel and sambhar. Sariska Tiger Reserve is also known for its wide populace of Rhesus monkeys. The national park is also home to many bird species including tree pie, sand grouse, grey partridge, peafowl, Indian horned owls, bush quail and crested serpent eagle.

How to Reach the Sariska Tiger Reserve

You could travel by road via the closest railway station at Alwar. It is 37 kilometers away from the Sariska Tiger reserve. Another option is for foreigners to take the plane. The Jaipur Airport is the closest from the Sariska at the distance of about 107 kilometers away.

Places around Sariska Tiger Reserve

Kankwari Fort
This fort is one of the main attractions for visitors to the famous Sariska Tiger Reserve. The ancient fort lies in the buffer area of the national park and about 21 kilometers from its main point of entry.

Sariska Palace
This palace was built as the hunting lodge in 19th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in a quiet, calm and thickly wooded valley on the threshold of Sariska tiger Reserve. It is a shining jewel set in nature in all its natural magnificence and it is much admired by many discerning visitors for its natural surroundings and architectural grandeur.

The Ancient Shiva Temple
This temple is situated within the area of Sariska Tiger Reserve and supposed to be from the 15th century.

Road
Sariska Tigers Reserve is located off the Delhi to Alwar to Jaipur road. The city of Jaipur is situated at the distance of about 107 kilometers and Delhi at the distance of 200 kilometers from Sariska. The town or city of Sariska is well linked with Alwar and is further linked with the bus services that travel from Jaipur and Delhi.
