My father has always hated wearing neck ties, and he also had a favorite saying to go along with his attitude: "I hope whoever invented the necktie was hung by the neck until dead. Now that would be justice." I truly believe that a major part of the reason he has never had a white-collar office job is because he didn’t want to wear a neck tie every day to work.
However, my father is also a die-hard fan of professional baseball. And now that he has discovered MLB (Major League Baseball) neckties, he doesn’t seem to mind wearing them anymore. In fact, I believe he looks forward to occasions when he can wear his latest neck tie. (My father, unlike many baseball fans, doesn't root for a single team. He loves baseball; all baseball. He is such a baseball fan that he will watch any game that is on the sports channels; he appreciates a good game no matter who is playing whom. Consequently, he now owns several MLB neck ties. He enjoys seeing how long it takes before the person he is talking to notices that the tie he is wearing is covered with the logos from an MLB team.) I hate to say it, but sometimes I suspect that he even hopes a funeral will occur every so often, just so he has a reason to show off one of his baseball ties at another event, albeit a sad one.
Since my dad doesn’t have a favorite team to buy multiple ties for, he uses other criteria to decide which neck tie to wear. Primarily, it is by color. If he is wearing a dark gray suit, he will usually contrast the dark jacket and pants with a splash of red - a tie featuring the Boston Red Sox or the Cincinnati Reds. His brown tweed jacket is usually accompanied by a tie with a greenish tint, like an Oakland A's tie. He has a lot of choices for his blue suit: the Kansas City Royals, the Detroit Tigers, the Colorado Rockies, the Florida Marlins, and of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers all feature different, prominent shades of blue. Fortunately, with thirty teams in the American and National Leagues of the MLB, my father has plenty of "fashion choice" whenever he wants to step out in a shirt and tie.
Needless to say, even though my father previously expressed his hope that the inventor of the neck tie was "hung by the neck until dead," I am personally very appreciative of whoever invented placing the Major League Baseball logos on quality silk neck ties. My dad is dressing much sharper now. I would much rather take him to dinner wearing a dress shirt, jacket and MLB tie than the baseball jerseys he used to consider appropriate for dinner out in a nice restaurant. It looks like, after a few decades of persistent resistance, my father is finally growing up and finding the pleasure in dressing like an adult. Inventor of sports ties, whoever you are, thank you!
