Ever heard of Dendrophobia? Well if you haven't it's a disorder that affects many people in the UK and i'm sure across the entire world. Like the aracnophobe who squashes spiders the dendrophobe orders the neaerest tree surgeon to cut down anything standing in the way of their view. As a tree surgeon I'm often involved in the planting of new trees, and you may be surprised to hear that this seemingly innocent and environmentally friendly act is often the cause for much misunderstanding. I've been shouted at threatend with police action and once had a neighbors bull terrier chase me up a tree because the lady concerned was so upset about the trees bieng planted! They'll block out the light and ruin my patio she shouted angrily as her dog barked below me. Only after much convincing that they would be an asset to the local environment if properly looked after did she eventually call off the hound. People often ask me when is the best time to plant a tree? The answer I most often give is 100 years ago but the second best time is today. Many more trees are dying and bieng cut down than planted globally, this is such a shame as it only takes an hour to fell a large tree but it takes 600 years to replace it. Fortunately in my area of the south of England people are changing their attitudes toward tree conservation with the deadly Dutch elm disease still fresh in our minds the Elm trees in our area are some of the oldest surviving specimens in the world. Dutch Elm claimed in the region of 20M trees and is still killing them today, the only other tree disaster to strike this area in living memory that can rival Dutch Elm is the storm of 1986 which is said to have claimed over 30M trees, this was such a sad time for anyone interested in these ancient and majestic organisms. For more information about tree care visit my website, the shady tree company.
