If you’re blessed enough to possess a lawn, then eventually you are gonna require to have it cut. The easy choice is to pay for somebody else to do it for you! There are several good lawn maintenance and gardening companies around. However, when you don’t control the finances to do this or you enjoy mowing the lawn (it may be very therapeutic) then you will want to obtain a lawn mower. But which one should you buy? You will discover a confusing array of brands, sizes, designs and different prices within the market.

You want to ask yourself a number of questions to ensure you select the right one. Obviously, your budget is usually a key question, but consider the size of your lawn, what you utilize it for and what sort of grass you have on it. I do know of one specific company who promote thier gardening services who own a range of lawn mowers and spend time once they arrive at your premises determining which mower is best for that task before them.

The Size and Shape of Your Lawn
Those rich people with large, regular lawns have alternative requirements from those with small, irregular shaped ones. So, for instance, if you have a lot of lawn to cut with few obstacles like flower beds or trees, then a sit on lawn mower is ideal. They are expensive, rather large and bulky, also you might need somewhere to keep it, of course. But They are excellent for cutting large areas of grass and for impressing the neighbours! The great brands are Honda, Hayter, Lawn King, Mountfield, Yardman, Snapper, Toro and Lawnflite. For slighter areas with trees and curved borders, a small, light, manoeuvrable mower should be your first choice. Anything too powerful or bulky will tire you out quickly.

Should I Choose an Electric or Petrol Powered Lawn Mower?

The selection between electric and petrol powered mowers comes down to the idiosyncrasies of the garden. In case you do not have any easy access to electricity, or you have tough weeds and need power, or you don’t want to run an extended cable for instance, then a petrol mower must be your first choice. They are generally more powerful than electric mowers, but they require regular maintenance - very similar to a car - and remember, they might be heavy and bulky. They might also require some strength to start up since the vast majority of them have a pull cord to crank up the ignition.

For small spaces, an electrical mower will probably be your first choice. They are generally cheaper than petrol mowers, easy to maintain and smaller so that they store easily. And there's even rechargeable electric mowers when you do not have access to power.

Should I Buy a Hover Mower, Rotary or Cylinder Mower?

Hover mowers are great for smaller, uneven areas with different varieties grass. Consider areas with lots of trees or flower beds with curved boundaries and tight spaces. They will cut evenly but you will not get the stripes or rollered effect on the lawn that you have cut. Flymo and Allen produce one of the best hover mowers. For the perfect finish a cylinder mower is best. And if you are able to afford it, pay for one with a roller attached at the rear. A superior quality cylinder mower will give the cleanest, best looking cut of all and aided by the roller attached provides you with that Wimbledon lawn finish. Beautiful. Good brands of cylinder petrol mower: Qualcast, Atco, Lawnflight and Masport.

Rotary mowers fit virtually in between the two. Perfect for larger lawns which may be a bit uneven or slightly overgrown. Perhaps a little bit excessive to deal with for a hover mower. However, they will not give you the perfect bowling green finish.

Good brands of rotary mowers: McCulloch, IBEA, Honda, Lawn King, Lawnflite, Lawnpro, Mitox, Tuffcut and Victa.

What to do With The Lawn Clippings.

Some gardeners advise that if you do not have too may trimmings, they should be left on the lawn as nutrients for your grass. I don’t subscribe to this process, however. But if your lawn needs feeding, check out paying for some lawn feed products. Lawn trimmings make the lawn look a mess and can prevent light reaching the fresh growing grass, which results in discolouration and damage.

So unless you prefer raking up trimmings, choose a lawn mower that has a collection box. After that, all you need to do is empty it when it gets full. Much less strenuous! In general, with lawn mowing, you receive out what you put in. So, buy the very best mower that you can pay for, whichever type of mower you decide on. Good luck with your lawn!
