Watches will forever be a thing of wonder. No matter how you look at it, watchmaking warrants highly technical skills, not to mention a good eye for design. In order to produce first-rate timepieces, watchmakers spend years honing their abilities. If you are familiar with the history of many luxury watch brands, you would know that most of the founders started their career as watchmakers at a very early age.

With a wide range of materials and technology available to these watchmakers, watches are no longer limited to timekeeping. Various features and functions are also present and, nowadays, even anticipated. Leading watchmaking companies are continually looking for ways to stay ahead of the competition by bringing inventive watches to the table.

While few carry on with tradition, using tried-and-tested technology to meet clients' expectations, there are those who go out of their way by producing watches that can be worn outside earth. Some think out of the box by introducing timepieces made from unusual materials such as wood and stone. A number of watchmaking companies focus on creating models fit for a particular profession, say aviation or diving.

When it comes to watches and complications, however, the one that always come on top is the Swiss brand Franck Muller. With "Master of Complications" as its slogan, watch aficionados go to Franck Muller whenever they are in the mood for a complicated timepiece, so to speak.

The brand, although recently established compared to other Swiss watchmaking companies, has been steadily making waves in the industry through its "World Premiers". As a tradition, Franck Muller works on releasing a new model every year. When Franck Muller says "new", the company means introducing watches which are never before marketed to the public. This tradition started in 1993 with a watch including a split seconds chronograph minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, plus an internal temperature indicator.

The innovative watch technology evident in each of Franck Muller's "World Premiers" is mostly patented. The brand, to this day, has copyright over the following: the Tourbillon, the Double-Face Chronograph, Striking Mechanism Indicator, the Double Jumping Hour, the Retrograde Seconds, Luminous Diamonds, the Master Banker, the One-Piece Tourbillon Cage, Winding Button Coaxial Control, the Master City, Gearing Device Safety, the Double Mystery, the Vegas and the Master Imperial Tourbillon.

Without any misses, Franck Muller delivered as promised. The "World Premiers" garnered well-deserved attention. There is the Master Banker which is favored for its capability to indicate multiple time zones. The Curvex Minute Repeater Tourbillon is considered a valuable collector's piece seeing that only 25 of them were released. It was in 1998 when Franck Muller was awarded for making "the most complicated wristwatch in the world". Said watch has a perpetual calendar complete with retrograde monthly equation, a minute repeater, a split-second Chronograph, which is a 60-minute timer as well, a 24-hour indicator, a power-reserve movement and striking mechanism, an internal-temperature-mechanism indicator, and a flying tourbillion.

Perhaps, out of all the Franck Muller timepieces, the Crazy Hours is the one which received the most hype. Given that the brand has so many distinguished watches, being deemed as the most popular is a feat worth taking note of.

What is so special about Crazy Hours?

The name itself should have given you a clue already. It is a watch that will make you go crazy, or at the very least, too amazed by its mechanism. The hours are not arranged in the usual manner. Typically, the hours are displayed chronologically, which only make sense. Franck Muller had a different take on this, however. Instead of displaying the hours chronologically, they are shown in a messy fashion, for the lack of better term. What makes it even crazier is that it follows the hours. The term clockwise no longer applies. Once an hour passed, the hour hand will jump to the next figure. It will take a lot of time before you can get used to the idea of keeping crazy hours.
