Publishing Decisions For Writers Series - Introduction
Most everyone feels they have a book in them. Eventually, a tiny proportion of those people will truly become an author and write a book. It was that even a smaller proportion of people who actually wrote a book were ever able to get it revealed despite the very fact that was their goal. But, with advancing technology, anyone who has written a book will now get it revealed in some kind or another. For authors, the world of publishing has blow wide open.
There are primarily 2 sorts of publishers- the ancient publishers and self-publishers. Ancient publishers are any publisher who pays an author an "advance" in hopes of recouping their cash (and additional) through sales of a fashionable book. The traditional publisher model has stayed fairly consistent over the years.
Self publishers on the other hand, have modified and evolved with the times. Initially, self-publishing consisted of subsidy and vainness publishers who just about revealed any book for a fee, no matter the standard of the manuscript. If an author was self-published, their work was not viewed with any credibility. Off-shoots of this concept developed such as co-publishing and shared publishing, where self-publishing firms took a lively role in serving to the author and were additional discerning about what manuscripts they published.
These concepts eventually morphed into POD or print on demand corporations who could or may not work with the author, but who solely printed a duplicate of a book when the book was bought. Finally, publishing has evolved most recently into e-books; books that are browse on a computer and not physically printed. This e-book niche exploded beyond computers with the appearance of e-readers like the Kindle, Nook or iPad and individuals can even read books on their sensible phones. These days, the opportunities for an author to get their work printed seem endless!
Book publishing is troublesome regardless of how a book is published. And like all industries, there are good players and unhealthy players which can provide the different types of publishing a dangerous reputation. But each methodology of publishing has its advantages and detriments and you almost certainly will not say that one is better than another. They are just different.
While ancient publishers initially looked down on self-publishing and convinced the literary world that self-printed authors weren't as smart as historically published authors, these same traditional publishers have had to scramble to vary their business models as their profits eroded to the varied completely different self-publishing models. But the underside line is that the publishing world has spread out opportunities everywhere for authors to search out some technique to induce their books printed. Authors are not restricted to simply one method of seeing their work. And that's a smart thing for writers.
Authors have to seek out the correct modality to fit their work. Books that look great in print could not be e-book material. At the same time, the e-book technique might be the sole manner that some authors will build any money. Authors could solely want some books for just their friends and family, while others may see their book as being number one on the New York Times best-seller list. What all these choices do, relying on what an author wants, is to allow every author a chance to become revealed which was not the case within the past.
With the new and completely different publishing opportunities return new and completely different responsibilities for authors. Authors need to pay attention to these prior to choosing anyone specific methodology to publish their book. In the opposite articles during this series, I can discuss the different strategies of publishing, their pros and cons. With this data, potential or repeat authors will be in a position to look at the opportunities currently open to them and create higher selections on how they need their book published.
