Why is there a need for every soon to be married couple to have an engagement ring? What is its importance and symbol? This article will discuss everything you need to know about engagement rings.

By definition, engagement rings are being worn on the ring finger of either hand which sometimes depends on which country the soon to be wed bride is situated – culture varies, you see. In Poland, their soon to be brides wear their engagement ring in the ring finger on the left hand. Other countries also observe a different way of wearing the ring. Engagement rings symbolize the formal acceptance of the bride to be of her fiancé to finally tie the knot.

There have been recent traditions about engagement rings nowadays. For example, in USA and Canada, the woman gets to buy the engagement ring for her male fiancé when they get engaged. Meanwhile, in Spain, the woman has to give an engagement wristwatch to her partner upon the acceptance of the engagement ring from him. It may sound a little odd, but that’s how it works in other countries.

De Beers has been believed to be responsible for the popularity of diamond engagement rings in the Western side of the world. Since 1940s, they have been advocating the usage of diamond engagement rings. Its original practice could be traced back in the early centuries to the decree by Pope Innocent III which states that couples intended to marry must wait longer after being betrothed to one another. In order to symbolize the waiting duration, the practice of having engagement rings was then born.

But then, in other countries, it is not really that necessary to give a diamond engagement ring to your partner since engagement rings could be in the form of other colored gems rather than simply the common ones.

Diamonds are the chosen ones since it’s the hardest of all the precious stones which symbolizes loves. However, if the couple or the man is on a tight budget, he could choose other gems like rubes, star sapphires and emeralds. In other countries, the engagement rings used may be just bands made of silver, gold or even titanium without any precious stones being mounted on them.

Now, if you choose to have engagement rings that are metal bands, make use of gold or platinum since these are way durable and it has a higher value compared to other metal typed engagement rings. Silver are not recommended for engagement rings since it is less durable than platinum or gold.

Back in the old times, the soon to be groom is the ones expected to select the engagement ring. At these changing times, most couples would try to live together first before getting married, it is becoming more of a norm for these live in partners to shop and choose their engagement rings together.

A woman who gets to accept an engagement ring is officially considered betrothed to the man who gave the ring. If, by any chance, she gets to break the ring, she must return it to the man who gave it. Now, if the man breaks the wedding engagement, the woman must not return the ring. In rare cases, whenever engagements are being cancelled, there are times that the court has to intervene to decide who gets to keep the engagement ring.
