What do you do when one of your best pigeons does not make it to the loft after a race? Here are four questions you need to answer:
1) How long was the bird missing before someone observed it? This will give you some hint of the condition of that bird. If it was lost for some time, chances are it has been injured2) How far from your loft was the bird when discovered? If it isn't very far, you must go and pick up the bird. Doing that will allow the finder know that you care about your birds. It will reflect well on all pigeon fanciers.. Expect the bird to be in bad condition, however. If it got almost home but not all of the way, there's possibly a problem.
3) Did the finder just pick the bird up, or did he need to catch it? It should not be easy to catch a pigeon in good health. If the person just picked the bird up it probably has an injury.
4) Does the finder actually know anything about pigeons? If the finder doesn't know very much about pigeons and just picked it up, he probably thinks it is a pet bird. Many folks don't know a healthy pigeon would have flown off and not allowed itself to be caught.
Some other factors are how long was the race, how far had the pigeon flown already and how far from the finish is it. Do not ever direct a finder to just let the bird go. It makes you look like you do not care about your bird. Either go and retrieve the bird or tell the locater he may keep it himself. If he can't keep it, locate yet another pigeon fancier close by and have them pick it up. They might give it a new home or make a plan to get it back to you.
Remember, the bottom line is it really is your bird. You put it out to race and it really is your responsibility to take care of it.
