Yet ANOTHER week has gone by... and it is time to start the Decluttering Challenge! Wouldn't you like to be able to come home to a clutter-free, tidy, peaceful house? Imagine the joy of working in a kitchen where all of your utensils are where they ought to be, and where your counter tops glisten and beg to be covered with home made cookies instead of clutter? Start yourself on a Decluttering Challenge right now! What is a Decluttering Challenge, you ask? Simply put, it is a challenge you assign yourself (and/or your siblings and friends) to get a massive part of your home decluttered in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day DeClutter Challenge

One category of challenge is named the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the concept is that on each of the 30 days of the month you declutter one item or part of your home, great or small. The objects can vary from the bottom shelf in your pantry cupboard to your son's old sports equipment in your work shop, from your underwear drawer to the kraft supply kit that gets hidden in the home office closet. The most important thing is to be practical with your chore assignment. Writing "put pictures collected the previous 4 years into photo-albums" most likely won't be able to be done in a single afternoon, but perhaps "arrange the pictures into envelopes or piles according to the occasion or child and throw out of pictures you won't need to keep" CAN be completed!
After your tasks have been assigned, think about giving yourself a reward to look forward to as soon as your 30 Day Challenge ends successfully! Yes, you will feel pleased just seeing your clutter-free home, certainly you've noticed that we have a tendency to give more effort to our work if we have something tangible to gain from our hard work!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

A different kind of challenge will require you to designate one complete week to your challenge. This will be a genuine "no one can distract me" week during which you empty your schedule in order to gaining back what was once your decluttered home. Every day, choose one room, lock yourself within it so to speak, and go crazy! Garbage bins, boxes for donations, boxes for re-sell, and obviously some basic cleaning supplies are going to be your must-haves. Pull your significant other, your room-mate, or your family along with you! Many hands make light work, but also many hands make much clean!
Perhaps you will be better off to scale back and give yourself a One Week Office Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Toy Room Declutter Challenge. Don't worry about it! If you commit to decluttering for 7 days (and seriously, what is 7 days in the grand scheme of life), and you will surely bring order back to a big part of your cluttered house!

The 2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge

This type of Declutter Challenge is a very popular one this year. Commit yourself to decluttering (by donating, selling, or throwing out) 2010 things in the year 2010. Does that sound impossible? If you do the math though, it's not too crazy at all. 2010 divided into 365 days is just 5.5 items per day. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your kitchen, the garage... that makes it seem more possible now, does it? Record your success on a calendar, and see the clutter vanish!
Yet another way you could do the 2010 Decluttering Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That is 33.5 hours.... A whole lot until you remember that there are actually 8,760 hours in one year! This is less than one 45 minute session per week! BUT, 2010 minutes is enough to get a LOT clutter-free!

So, the "30 Day Decluttering Challenge", the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge"... three great ways to start decluttering your home! Which one will you do?
