Daily Problems and Challenges of Employing a Wheelchair
The daily issues/ challenges of employing a wheelchair, is mostly unrecognized by non-wheelchair users.
I hope, by highlighting a number of those challenges in this text, everybody becomes a lot of awake to them. So we will all work along to form a safer and fairer world for ourselves, our families and communities.
The issues embody but are not restricted to:
1. Buildings with doorways, corridors or parking lots that are difficult / impossible to tolerate, using a wheelchair. This makes it extremely troublesome for wheelchair users to induce things done. Things like searching, visiting friends / relatives, e.t.c
2. Rough, uneven, dangerously sloping grounds, make it extremely tiring to push wheelchairs - especially Manual Wheelchairs - around.
3. Travelling by public transport - buses, trains, e.t.c takes a ton of time. The majority of time consumption comes from looking forward to the buses to get low down enough, and then slide out the ramp access, so the wheelchair will go in. And then, getting off the transport as well...
After you add this to the time it takes a wheelchair user to accomplish the daily care routine of washing, getting dressed, feeding... That's a ton of time out of a 24 hour day!
4. Travelling by train conjointly poses a ton a lot of challenge to the wheelchair user than the buses. Especially negotiating that gap between the train entrance and therefore the platform.
5. Health Issues such as Muscle Cramps and Pressure Sores. As a result of sitting in the wheelchair, or anywhere else - as wheelchair users would like to, when not lying down - cramps and pressure sores are a nice supply of discomfort, concern and challenge.
6. Motorists, Pedestrians and other road users create another area of challenge to the wheelchair user. Being below the average line of vision whereas riding a wheelchair on the roads, means that that one could not be quickly or clearly seen by others. This has been a cause of the many road accidents involving wheelchair users.
7. Finally, and just as necessary, is the angle of the society - others - to wheelchair users. Others who don't use a wheelchair, realize it a small amount difficult to determine through the eyes of one. Non-wheelchair users could speak down at one; Totally ignore one; Expect them to do additional for themselves, notwithstanding the physical limitations... to say a few.
All these challenges may seem overwhelming and force a wheelchair user to remain at home. This need not be the case though.
With more info on these challenges; A greater awareness of the on the market disability aids to overcome them; And an empathic understanding from the society at giant, these challenges can and can be overcome.
Creating the globe safer and additional wheelchair-user friendly. Particularly as everybody, in due course, most likely can end up in one anyway!
