It is no longer expected of watches to simply be timekeeping devices. Given the watch technology developed by leading luxury watch brands in recent years, watches are now carrying out other functions and quite efficiently at that. Take the Rolex Yacht-Master, one of the most favored sports watch ever produced by the brand, as an example.

The Yacht-Master was first made available to the public back in 1992 when model 11628, which was made in 18K yellow gold, was released. Two years after, the brand marketed another model under the Yacht-Master series which was for the ladies. That same year, Rolex decided to also unveil a mid-size man’s model. This is quite notable considering the fact that it was the first time the company made a professional watch in a smaller size. By 1996, the brand produced another look for Yacht-Master, which was in two-tone (in 18K yellow gold and stainless steel), both for ladies and mid-size men.

Seeing that one watch after another was being released every couple of years since the model was launched, one may lead to believe that the Rolex Yacht-Master was well-appreciated by the market. While it is true that many were pleased with the series, it was only in 1997 when Yacht-Master achieved a whole new level of popular.

What was the turning point? The answer is one word—Rolesium. Rolesium is a coined term used by Rolex to refer to their watches which are made in stainless steel and has a platinum finish. As soon as the luxury watch brand released the Platinum Yacht-Master, people started giving the model the attention it rightfully deserves and since then, the demand for Yacht-master has been steadily increasing.

So, what exactly are the features of a Rolex Yacht-Master?

One of the distinguishing marks of a Yacht-Master is the Rolex Maxi Dial. Judging from the name alone, anybody can easily figure out what is being referred to. Yes, the markers and the hands of the Yacht-Master’s dial of are bigger and made more solid when put side by side with the other watches under the Oyster Professional line. The Yacht-Master is designed as such in order to generate more luminosity.

To match the Maxi Dial, Rolex made sure that the bezel is complementary. The Ring Command bezel has a unique mechanical component which makes it possible to be used as controller for countdowns. This feature is definitely created with the idea of timing races in mind. Also, the bezel is made from solid platinum like the watch dial which is protected by a sapphire crystal.

When it comes to the case, the Rolex Yacht-Master boasts a 40mm diameter although is slightly thinner compared to other Oyster Professional watches. This is actually a bonus since it gives the Yacht-Master a classy look suitable to formal occasions.

As a sports-watch, it has a water resistance level of 100 meters. While other Rolex watches like the Sea-Dweller and the Submariner offers a higher water resistance level, one have to bear in mind that the Yacht-Master is not intended for diving.

There is also the Triplock winding crown. It took 10 varying elements taken from 18K gold and specific polymers to perfect a crown that is able to protect the watch movement from dust and water. As tightly locked as a submarine latch, one does not have to worry about disturbing the watch movement while in the water or while in the middle of a race.

Armed with a classic cool appearance and unparalleled watch technology, the Rolex Yacht-Master is indeed a symbol of a master—unconventionally elegant and indisputably efficient.
