If you are trying to find a simple and effortless way to add style and comfort to your bedroom you need to think about a duvet. This is very similar to a quilt or comforter but is often much more luxurious and easy to manage than other types of bed linens.

A duvet is made up of fill sandwiched between two layers of fabric. Many times they are filled with down although they may also be filled with silk or synthetic fibers. The fibers trap air which holds heat and provides warmth during cooler weather. Different types of fill have better insulating properties. One of the best is down. Goose down is often used as filler in high-end duvets because it can trap a lot of heat without being overly heavy. Silk also has excellent insulating properties and can keep you very warm as well. It is an excellent alternative if you have allergies to duck or goose down.

If you are shopping for a duvet, you need to look at things other than what is filling it. The material which covers it is also important. You want to make sure that the fabric is dense and has a tight weave. If you have a duvet which is filled with down you need to pick fabric that will not allow any of the down to escape. It is amazing how feathers can work themselves out through small openings in the fabric. As well, a high thread count will be longer lasting and more durable than fabric with a looser weave.

Once you have your duvet you can then look at purchasing a cover. Because a duvet is often filled with material which does not respond well to washing you need a way to protect the duvet. The traditional way to use a duvet is without top sheets that keep sweat and dirt from getting on the cover during the course of a night's sleep. A duvet cover provides that barrier and is designed to be cleaned more frequently than the duvet inside.

Duvet covers are available in a range of sizes, colors and fabrics. They range from very formal covers in silk or satin to more informal covers made of less expensive materials. They are often reversible and designed to hold up to a certain amount of regular wear and tear.

If you purchase a good duvet cover and a duvet to go in it, you may be amazed at how warm and comfortable your bed will be.
