Benzodiazepine Withdrawal and EFT- the Ideal Self-Management Tool
I'm a sophisticated Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner in addition to being a recovered involuntary benzodiazepine (benzo) addict. I came off benzos in 1988 and qualified in EFT in 2006. That's quite an uncommon combination. I want EFT had been around after I was coming back off. But currently I am qualified, it puts me in the distinctive position of having the ability to supply EFT tapping routines to individuals who are withdrawing from a place of private experience. And that is very good news as a result of if there is one factor you would like when coming off benzos - it's the recommendation and support of others who've been through it - 'survivors'.
My very own withdrawal in 1988
There wasn't much information out there once I came off, definitely nothing like there is now - web sites, books and organisations. Professor Heather Ashton, world authority on benzo addiction and withdrawal, hadn't set up her withdrawal clinic in Newcastle or written her manual (see below). I devised my very own withdrawal programme, putting together a selection of complementary therapies and emotional /psychological support techniques. The result is 'Safe Benzo Withdrawal', my double CD set (see below) that contains recommendation and information primarily based on my own experience. There's also a guided relaxation that I wrote specifically for benzo withdrawal. The info CD contains equivalence tables for switching to Diazepam (valium), a slower acting benzo.
Withdrawal Symptoms vary
Not everyone encompasses a tough time coming back off. We're all completely different and there are many factors affecting the kind of withdrawal i.e. dosage, kind of medication, time you have been taking it etc. Rest assured. Several thousands of have currently successfully come back off and are living proof that it will be done. And now there is an entire selection of withdrawal support resources available. (see below)
What is EFT?
EFT could be a healing tool developed by an American, Gary Craig. It's a kind of emotional acupuncture based mostly on ancient Chinese healing. About five thousand years ago the Chinese discovered the human body had energy channels, referred to as meridians, through which the body's essential energy or chi flows. Managing the flow of chi forms the basis of the Jap healing practices, like acupressure and acupuncture, that are currently widely utilized in the West.
How does it work?
Once we expertise anything which distresses us, be it physical pain, emotional distress, anxiety, anger, worry etc, there's a stoppage within the body's energy field and the EFT tapping is meant to get rid of this disruption and restore a sense of calmness and equilibrium. These energy disruptions can be held unresolved within the body, for many years, and often tapping is addressing an event from childhood that continues to have an effect on one's present life.
How do you do it?
You tap together with your fingertips on various points on the energy meridians round the face and body whilst focusing your thoughts on a distressing symptom or feeling you're having and repeating an affirmation or positive self-healing phrase. (full directions, see link below)
Why is EFT good for benzo withdrawal?
It's easy to find out and terribly simple to use. Concentration span can be very limited when you are withdrawing, therefore a method that's quick and simple is important
Use it anywhere, anytime. Benzo withdrawal symptoms, especially panic attacks, will be unpredictable. They could wake you in the dark, or come when you are out somewhere. With EFT you don't would like another person, or any equipment - just your own fingertips and a minute or 2 of your own time.
It is a tailor made self-healing tool. You'll be able to style your own tapping routines to deal with whatever symptoms you're experiencing.
EFT is a self-management tool. This can be regarding taking back power and responsibility for your own healing. Addiction, whether or not voluntary or involuntary (iatrogenic*), drains your self-empowerment. Using EFT can restore a way of control over your life.
It's free. Just download the manual (see below). There is no monetary outlay. In fact, you have the choice of consulting a certified EFT practitioner sometimes, to stay you on the right track and to realize some objectivity, and maybe learn some more advanced techniques - see my contact details below. But the basic routine taught within the manual consistently produces smart results.
Thus there's 5 excellent reasons to use EFT in your withdrawal and help you on your journey to recovery. Top 3 withdrawal tips are; Be safe - talk your GP. Be wise - taper off very gradually at your own pace. Be supported - find or begin a support group, either head to head or on the internet. I would like you all strength on your journey to recovery.
*iatrogenic = caused by the medical profession
Bear in mind: never stop taking your medication suddenly. This can be dangerous. Consult your GP. The data in this article is not supposed as an alternative choice to medical counselling.
I'm an advanced Emotional Freedom Techniques practitioner with personal experience of withdrawal and recovery from benzodiazepine tranquillisers (benzos). The advice and info I offer comes from lived experience. My 'Safe Benzo Withdrawal' CD is an straightforward listening audio resource complete with a relaxation specifically written for withdrawal, and a data browse-only CD containing Professor Ashton's Diazepam Equivalence Tables for safely switching to a slower acting benzo i.e Diazepam (valium). For some, benzo withdrawal is relatively easy. For others it can be a difficult journey requiring great patience and faith. I celebrate the courage and resilience of my fellow benzo survivors, many of whom are also now providing recommendation and support for others trying to come back off. Benzo withdrawal forces us to become resourceful and resilient in ways that we tend to may never have imagined and, as such, is a gift. By offering my skills as an EFT practitioner along with the recommendation and info on my 'Safe Benzo Withdrawal' CD, I hope to be creating a positive contribution to the benzo recover community and help to lift awarensss concerning the consequences of this class of drug therefore that, in future, others can not should expertise what we have a tendency to went through. Special thanks and acknowledgement visit Professor Heather Ashton, who alone spoke 'truth to power', refusing to ignore the consequences of those drugs and worked tirelessly for years to support addicts to seek out safe withdrawal protocols. For those still to make this journey I say, "Take heart , several thousands folks have successfully withdrawn. Life on the opposite facet is wonderful".
