Our environment is one of the most interesting to learn about. It encompasses plants, animals and their habitats.

Field guides are books, documents or devices designed to act as reference to different species of plants and animals. There are those that deal only with plants and everything about it. It covers even the most unpopular species hardly seen in the thick of the forests or other tropical regions. The detailed description of leaves is essential to classify green plants in the area. Illustrations help to give a clear picture in the minds of the readers.

Field guides also include interesting and useful information about plants. It makes it easier to identify different plant species that greatly help in researches, experiments, studies, inventory or fieldwork.

There are various types of field guides. The design of most field guides are used and accessed by the general public. It is made very plain and easy to understand so it could be read even those with no backgrounds in botany or other related general sciences. Specialized field guides focus on highlighting the visible features of the plants without requiring a detailed dissection, non portable equipments or high powered microscopes.

Trees listed in field guides are divided into categories or types. It forms the basis for effective comparison and contrast side by side among the different species. Each species comes with a clear graphical illustration. Some examples of these tree categories are needle leaf conifers, toothed simple leaves and palms, compound leaves along with scale leaf conifers, untoothed simple leaves and lobed simple leaves.

Moreover, wildflowers have types or categories shown in field guides. Again, the basis of the categories is its similar relationships. Some examples of these are simple shaped flowers, flowers with odd shapes and rounded clusters as well as elongated clusters, fruits and seeds. You can also add Dandelions and Daisy like flowers as well as Cacti, Agaves and Yuccas to the list.
