If you are looking for an alternative to down filled duvets you may have seen duvets filled with silk fiber. Because of their high price tag, you may wonder what makes a silk duvet worth the money that the stores are charging. You may also want to know more about why a silk duvet is superior not only to duvets filled with synthetic fiber but also goose and duck down as well.

The fact is that there are many different benefits to choosing a duvet that is filled with silk fibers. The first is that these duvets are much less likely to cause allergic reactions than one which is filled with feathers. In the beginning, when a down duvet is in top shape and there are no feathers escaping from inside a feather duvet may not cause allergic reactions. However, in time, when the weave of the duvet cover can break down, feathers can escape and cause all sorts of problems in people who have allergies.

The second is that a duvet filled with silk fibers is much easier to clean than one which is filled with down or even synthetic fibers. Both down and synthetic fibers will break down over time and with repeated cleanings. However, they will break down in different but equally unpleasant ways.

Down filled duvets will invariably become lumpy and cold over time. This is because the down will bunch up and group together. Because the small fibers in the feathers that trap air and provide insulation are gone, they will not protect against heat loss as easily. Synthetic fibers will also clump up over time and cause cold spots although they may not be as lumpy as natural down duvets may be.

If you are looking at silk filled duvets you want to make sure that you are picking duvets filled with long silk fibers. These will have been woven together to form an insulating layer that will both breathe and retain heat. This makes them much more comfortable year round than a synthetic duvet will be. They tend to be much more expensive than any other kind of duvet however so if cost is a factor you may want to stick to other fillers.

By knowing the advantages of silk filled duvets you may be able to justify the added cost of purchasing one. Whether it is because they are hypoallergenic or they last much longer than a synthetic duvet, the choice is clear. Silk duvets really are worth the money that you will pay.
