One MORE week has now gone by... and it is time to take the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't you like to be able to come home to a spotless, neat, peaceful home? Imagine the joy of working in a kitchen where all of your utensils are in their proper spots, and where your counter tops glisten and beg to be covered with home made cookies rather than clutter? Start yourself on a Declutter Challenge today! Not sure of what is meant by Decluttering Challenge? It put it simply, a Declutter Challenge is a challenge you offer yourself (and/or your family and friends) to get a big part of your home decluttered in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge

One kind of challenge is referred to as the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the idea is that on each of the 30 days of the month you decluttering one object or part of your house, large or small. The objects can range from the middle shelf in your pantry cupboard to the media centre in your den, from your underwear drawer to the kraft supply kit that gets stuffed in the spare room closet. The bottom line is to be realistic with your task assignment. Assigning "put pictures accumulated from the previous two years into photo albums" almost certainly isn't do-able in one day, but perhaps "sort the photos into envelopes or piles by the occasion or person and dispose of photos you do not want to keep" COULD be completed!
When your tasks are assigned, think about arranging for yourself a reward to look forward to after your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, having a much less cluttered house will be a reward in itself, but it's an undeniable truth that we work harder if we have something tangible to gain from our efforts!

The One Week Decluttering Challenge

Another kind of challenge will require you to designate one full week to your project. This will be a genuine "no one can distract me" week for the duration of which you clear out your schedule in order to getting back what was once your clutter-free house. Assign yourself one room of the house for every day, close yourself within it so to speak, and go crazy! Garbage bags, bins for donations and re-sell, and of course some good ole' cleaning supplies will be your must-haves. Pull your significant other, your friends, or your kids along with you! Many hands make light work, but also many hands make much clean!
Perhaps you will be better off to scale back and give yourself a One Week Office Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Garage Declutter Challenge. No worries! By committing yourself for seven days (and really, what is seven days in the grand scheme of life), and you will no doubt bring order back to at least part of your cluttered house!

The 2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge

This type of Declutter Challenge is a very popular one this year. Commit yourself to decluttering (by donating, selling, or throwing out) 2010 items during the year 2010. Does that sound like way to much? If you do the math though, it is really not as bad as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is only 5.5 items every day. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your office, the garage... that makes it seem more reasonable now, does it? Keep track by ticking it off on the calendar or somewhere handy, and watch the clutter melt away!
Yet another way one can do the 2010 DeClutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... Quite a bit until you remember that there are actually 8,760 hours in one year! It's less than one 45 minute session per week! BUT, 2010 minutes is enough to get a LOT decluttered!

So, the "30 Day Decluttering Challenge", the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge"... three amazing ways to start decluttering your house! Which one are you going to do?
