The symptoms are real and it causes your body clock to go haywire. Jet lag is one of the worst things about traveling as your body attempts to coordinate its internal clock with the different time zones. You may go through several times zones in a 24-hour period and when it is dark your body is expecting daylight and vice-versa. For someone who not familiar with traveling in this manner, it can cause some unpleasant results for you. Your business or holiday plans can be turned upside down because of jet lag.

The most common symptoms associated with it are fatigue and exhaustion, which are sometimes paired with headaches, dizziness, muscle aches, and bizarre eating habits. If you are planning a vacation getaway, this can make it hard for you to enjoy yourself especially if you want to do a lot of sightseeing. Before you go on a vacation or plan to travel, there are measures you can take to stop or delay jet lag. You should be relaxed and not under any stress before you board that airplane. Avoid drinks that contain alcohol and caffeine this may cause dehydration and intensify your symptoms of jet lag. Light exercise can help but nothing that will cause body aches or muscle soreness. It can also help you sleep better. Be as comfortable as possible while flying and use pillows or eye masks to aid in your sleep. Before the plane takes off, remove your shoes and grab your pillow and a blanket. A large bottle of water should be consumed during the flight even if you don’t want to drink it.

You should set your watch with the time of your destination zone. If it is your regular bedtime in the time zone of your destination, you should sleep. If it is not, remain awake to help regulate your body clock. A light sleeping aid may help you sleep. The crew will gladly wake you up when the plane lands. If you remain awake, try walking the aisle and do some stretching. Melatonin pills have been taking to avoid jet lag and some travelers swear by them. Your body releases Melatonin when there is no light and when it is completely dark, it acts as a natural sleeping aid. This hormone controls your body’s clock. The pill form can be purchased over the counter at your local drug store.

When you land and have arrived at your destination make sure to set the time. A small nap at noon can help you if you become tired and will not interfere with your sleep at bedtime. If you stay awake at night and sleep during the day this will make your jet lag linger. You can make your trip a more pleasant one if you follow these tips.
