While it was once rare to see women in higher education, now more women than men are attending college. Though a lot of progress has been made, inequalities still exist between men and women. Women still typically earn less than men and occupy a smaller percentage of high-paying jobs than men. So while women may be the majority of college students today, there are still a lot of reasons for organizations to offer scholarships for women to try to close these gaps. Such scholarships can be great news for female students, as they can help you pursue a career you may not have originally considered, or to follow your dreams without taking out a lot of student loans.
Often, scholarships for women have a individual goal in mind, regardless of whether it is to get women into leadership positions, doctoral programs, or currently male-dominated industries or companies. Many scholarships for women are intended to encourage female students to not just attend college, but to succeed afterwards. A number of scholarships for women award students who demonstrate leadership abilities or entrepreneurial spirit before attending college. Others reward women who have been out of school for awhile and want to return to advance their careers. Similarly, scholarship opportunities exist to encourage women already excelling as undergraduate students to consider graduate work and eventual professorships or other highly skilled positions. A large number of scholarships for women strive to propel women into fields like math, science, and technology which still have a very small percentage of female workers. For example, several scholarships exist to entice women into careers in engineering and business. Specialized companies such as IBM and Microsoft also offer scholarships for women to encourage recipients to apply for jobs with them after graduation.

Financial aid comes in a wide variety of forms. Once you fill out your FAFSA and receive your Student Aid Report to see what your financial aid package will look like, you’ll have a good idea of the grants, student loans and other federal funding options you qualify for. But considerably of the scholarship search you’ll have to do on your own. While college-based scholarships can be very generous, and you should definitely approach your intended college about awards they sponsor based on need, athletics, academics or other criteria, don’t forget about private college scholarships from outside organizations that may be just as generous and often less competitive. Look locally and nationally. Consider your talents and unique abilities. If you’re a writer, target the essay scholarships. We can’t say it enough: apply early and apply often to maximize the free money you’re able to get through college scholarships and to minimize the amount of student loan debt you’ll face post-graduation. And if you feel yourself floundering or feeling intimidated by the process, browse through our site for tips and strategies on applying to college scholarships successfully, finding scholarships linked to any criteria and characteristic you can think of, and making yourself a more interesting scholarship applicant.

The next step is sitting down and actually applying for the scholarships. If there are a hundred awards that you want to compete for don’t worry about applying for them all in one day. Pressuring yourself will root the quality of the applications and essays you submit to diminish and this will only encumber your chances of earning a scholarship. To avoid this dilemma, set a goal for yourself. Decide how too many thoroughly completed applications that you can send in a week. Maybe it’s 20 or maybe, if the scholarships that you want to apply for require a great deal of homework and/or time, perhaps it's only 4 or 5. Anyway, designate a goal for each week and stick to it.
