After nearly a decade of rumors and assumptions, Apple's at last revealed the iPad. And I had the pleaseure to be present amid it's unveling ini San Francisco on January 27th and man...what a cool machine it was. It's a semi-inch thick and weighs merely 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen LCD display, and it's running a custom 1GHz Apple "A4" microprocessor made by the P.A. Semi team, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of reserve. It'll {come in|be available in a 16, 32, and 64GB sizes, and it's got the anticipated connectivity: extremely small. There's a 30-pin Dock connector, a loudspeaker, a mic, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi and optional 3G, in addition to an accelerometer and a compass. There is as well a keyboard dock, that connects beneath in the portrait orientation, support intended for up to 1024x768 VGA out and 480p composite out through new dock adapter cables, and a camera attachment kit that permits you to import photographs from your camera over USB or straightforwardly through an SD reader. The device is maintained by iTunes, just like the iPhone -- you sync the whole thing over to your Mac. Needless to say, it can run iPhone apps -- either pixel-for-pixel in a window, or pixel-doubled full screen -- but designers can also aim the new screen size using the updated iPhone OS SDK, that is available today. The 3G version runs on AT&T and is included with up-to-the-minute data plans: 250MB for $14.99 and an unlimited plan for $29.99 a month without a contract. Activations are handled on the iPad, to help you activate and cancel whenever you want. Every iPad is unlocked and comes with a GSM "micro-SIM," so you can use it abroad, except there are not any international deals in place at the moment -- Apple claims they're going to be back "this summer" with news on that front.
The ipad starts at $499 for 16GB, 32GB for $599, in addition to $699 64GB. Adding together 3G costs at $130 per model, so the most costly model (64GB / 3G) is $829. The WiFi-only unit will ship in about 50 to 60 days, and the 3G models will are available in 90 days.
