People take their work home with them. This used to be a simple fact of business life that happened from time to time though. However, telecommuting and an extreme growth in entrepreneurship has resulted in more and more people being based out of home offices. This poses a challenge for most 3pl providers who are used to working out of companies in business areas of cities, not residential communities. So what happens when you want to have a shipment or a product picked up from your house?

If this is something that you're going to need for your company, you need to look for a specific kind of courier, or at the very least, one that offers a very specific kind of service. This is a courier that offers something called home pickup or delivery. This means that they do have drivers that do the residential routes in your city, and you will be able to get the pickup made that you request.

Some couriers literally never have their drivers in those areas of a city. There is simply no business there and if they were to send them out for one rare delivery they would lose money. That is because a courier business is made profitable by scheduling many deliveries close together in both area and time.

Because even couriers that make it their business to go to residential areas might lose money on the time they spend in those areas, you can expect to pay a higher rate for residential pickup. This might be a higher rate in general on all shipping from that area, or it might come in the form of a flat rate surcharge that is added to any orders that are made from that area. If you do think you're going to need to ship from a residence often and you find a courier that charges the same rates as they do when picking up from a business, hold on to them.

The only other barrier to getting something picked up from your home is that you're usually going to have to have an account with the courier company in order to get that service. Usually, couriers will provide service to both account and non-account holders. However, anything which varies from the strictest most basic level of service usually requires that you open an account beforehand, and in most cases that will apply in the case of residential pickup.
