If your courier has a bicycle messenger division, you might see a clear advantage in trying to use that division when it is possible to do so. For many, the appeal of a courier service which has a bike messenger contingent is the cost. Because bicycle messenger need less training, less insurance costs, and far less investment in a vehicle and vehicle operation costs, the cost of shipping something around town by bike messenger is often much cheaper.

There are limitations though to what you can send by bike messenger. The first limitation is obvious, which is that a bicycle messenger can only carry goods so far. Most have a range limited to the downtown of a single city. It is important to realize to that there is a definite restriction to what kinds of packages these messengers can carry safely on their bicycles.

Safely is the watchword here. While many bike messengers might be able to potentially carry bigger packages in certain situations than they are allowed to by their companies, to do so would put them in danger. Carrying something that is too heavy or too large on a bicycle makes it more difficult to avoid getting in accidents, something which could potentially seriously injure the rider.

As far as weight goes, most courier companies have a simple limit of ten pounds on anything that you're going to send with a bicycle messenger. The reason is simply that they usually pickup a few deliveries at a time while riding their routes, and if they were to carry too many packages which weighed much more than ten pounds it would become far too difficult to ride.

Weight isn't the only restriction though. Many companies might not have an actual size limitation, but you have to use common sense when asking a bike messenger to carry anything for you. If they are to carry something which is extremely oversized, even if it's light, it can make it awkward for them to steer their bike. They have the right to refuse to carry anything as well, should they get to your location and realize that you did not accurately describe how difficult it would be to carry a certain object on their bicycle.

The best rule is just to use a little imagination. If you don't think that you would be comfortable riding on a bicycle carrying the object you want to ship, then you probably need a car or van courier.
