Usually, when you think of a courier company, you imagine someone driving a delivery truck or van, or possibly zipping around a financial district on a bicycle. However, there are all types of delivery services available, and a Bay area courier might utilize any number of different types of vehicles as part of their complete delivery fleet. When you start dealing with very large clients, especially those that deal with either very larger corporate clients or those that deal in emergency medical deliveries, this often begins to include delivery via helicopter.
The use of a helicopter as part of a courier service is reserved for when speed is of the absolute highest priority. Usually, the same day services that can be offered by ground couriers are more than fast enough for most urgent deliveries. When a helicopter is requested it typically means that the delivery is either medically emergent, or that very large amounts of money are involved.
Typically, this is because it is very expensive to use a helicopter courier service. The cost of flying a helicopter, even over short distances, is much, much greater than the cost of a ground courier of any kind. Therefore, there has to be sufficient reason for a company to require the use of a helicopter to move their goods, otherwise the cost is difficult to justify.
Helicopter courier service is also used to make deliveries to locations which are not easily accessible by ground courier. A good example of this is certain off shore drilling platforms. Many of these facilities will find it more common to have deliveries made via helicopter than not, simply because it is much quicker to fly something out than to ship it by sea.
Usually, if you foresee your organization having a use for a helicopter courier, this is a type of service that you're going to have to organize well in advance of actually having to do any shipping. You will have to have an account with the courier company and likely have to have extra insurance on top of your regular shipping insurance to cover this type of shipment. This can be time consuming to set up, and so it pays to have the account established beforehand, as once you're requesting a helicopter you probably need the delivery made right away, and don't have time for any extra paperwork that could have been done at an earlier time.
