There are many definitions of marketing and many people confuse marketing with sales and sales management. One commonly accepted definition is that marketing is finding out what people want and need, seeing what your business can do to safisfy those wants and needs and then creating a differentiated brand so that you stand out from your competitors.

So how do you become more ‘marketing orientated’ in your business? Remember everyone is a ‘business’ even if you are an employee. Employees simply exchange their time for regular income and benefits with one client, their employer. If you want to develop your career either as an entrepreneur or an employee it pays to think of the value you can add as a marketable entity.

So what are our five gilt edged marketing tips?

Firstly, most people tend to focus on the product or service they provide when they think about marketing. This is in practise a very narrow view. There are so many products and services in every marketplace that thinking of the core product or service is not enough.

Secondly, we have to think of the client expectations of the product or service. It is well known that buyers of low cost cars often have low expectations of the quality, performance and reliability of their purchase but are pleasantly surprised at how well the car actually performs. On the other hand buyers of expensive, luxury cars are often disappointed because their expensive purchase may well develop a fault which means the car fails to meet the expectations of the buyer. In terms of expectations it is much better to think of under promise and over deliver rather than the other way around!

Thirdly, it is important to think how we add something to our product or service that our competitors do not. Staying with the car example, a dealer who gives the customer a loan car whilst the customer’s car is being serviced together with a free wash and valet will invariably gain more business than their competitor who simply services the car and returns it to the customer in a less than clean condition.

The fourth point relates to the potential magic in the product. What could you include with your product that would make you so far ahead of the competition that they cannot begin to compete. Collection of the car from your home, free lottery tickets, a prize draw for a luxury holiday and so forth. Although some of these ideas would only be viable for the largest chain of motor dealers, the principle is one which could be scaled and adapted to fit a given dealer.

The fifth point is once you have sold something, get in touch with your customers a few weeks later and then give them a small gift. One really successful car dealer sends Christmas cards to all the customers he has served during the 30 years he has run his business. It works and he outstrips all his competitors in terms of customer loyalty and actual sales figures.

So marketing and the perceptions of our product or service we create in the market place can grow our business effectively. Marketing is one of the main keys to creating a successful business and can be used very effectively to create multiple streams of income for any business or individual.
