There is much more to choosing the right jewelry for a gift that just getting the most expensive piece you can afford. A person’s taste in jewelry is a very personal, and there are other considerations besides taste to keep in mind as well. Some people have allergies that will prevent them from wearing certain types of metals and others are particular about wearing either white or yellow gold. There are some questions you can ask yourself to help you make a choice that will be right for the person who is receiving the gift and the occasion for which you are giving it.

What types of jewelry have you noticed the person wearing in the past?

Although you may be tempted to think outside the box and purchase something out of the ordinary in the hopes that the person will change their preference, it is highly unlikely that it will happen. Whatever pieces of jewelry they normally wear are probably out of preference. If someone is normally without jewelry except for a watch and a pair of gold hoop earrings, then they probably haven’t been waiting for years for someone to give them a 1” wide white gold necklace. Keep their style in mind.

Do you know if they have any allergies to specific types of metal?

If you do, then stick with those pieces that are hypoallergenic. Although some people will use clear nail polish to form a barrier between themselves and the offending piece of jewelry, this isn’t a foolproof method and shouldn’t be necessary if you choose the right piece to start with.

Where do they wear their jewelry?

Obviously, an executive isn’t going to have the same needs in jewelry that you would expect a fashion consultant to have. For the professional, jewelry should be simple, of classic style, and in good taste.

What do you want to achieve with your gift?

Are you looking for a quality piece of jewelry that can be used as an heirloom for generations? Or, are you looking for something that will coordinate with their wardrobe and give them another option from those they already own? You don’t want to invest a lot of money into a trendy piece that will go out of style quickly any more than you should get a cheap imitation and pass it off as a high quality heirloom.

Are you giving her jewelry because she loves jewelry or because you want to give her something that has special meaning?

A gift of jewelry from a man to a woman can be the most difficult one to choose, especially if you are in a fairly young relationship. It may be hard to decide if you should choose a romantic piece with hearts or a classic piece that is of quality, such as a simple chain. A good rule to follow is “if you don’t feel comfortable about giving her a gift that is romantic, then it probably isn’t the right time for it”. Instead, choose something simple and have a (slightly) personal message engraved on it.

The key to getting the right jewelry as a gift for anyone is to stay within the perimeters of what they normally would choose for themselves. You can always increase the quality without drastically changing the style!
