There are some things more precious than its perceived value. These are things that remind us of a memory of a time in our lives when we were most happy. We often store these things away and forget about them till we dig them up again. And, upon seeing them, we are brought back to that time which we remember so clearly and vividly, just like it was yesterday.
We had begun to move my parent’s belongings to a storage facility. There were still many boxes to go and the move was taking quite some time. We were busy making sure that all was there and that the boxes which had been inventoried were handled with care.

It had taken us some time before we finally convinced my parents to move to a senior home with some nursing facility. Dad needed to be looked after 24/7. He had won his battle with cancer for now but it had taken its toll. He was no frail and spent most of the time in his hospital bed. Maybe he was tired from the 36 months of chemotherapy he endured without complaint. And upon his remission, he decided to visit all his old friends, those who were also sick too and during his meetings with such friends, he suffered a stroke. This attack left him in a coma for several days and when he woke up, he was never the same. He had a form of dementia but it was within control. But he couldn’t walk by himself and despite all the therapy sessions, we knew that he couldn’t be back to his normal busy self.

There was this special box that we noticed in the bedroom of my parents. It was as big as a hat box and on the top cover; it had a hand written sign which said “Mom’s Jewelry.” We suddenly realized that this was my father’s signature and were surprised to see it inside one of the walk in closets. We gently opened the box to see what was inside it. To our surprise, we did see some of mom’s jewelry but these were the fake and costume jewelry that she used to have and ones that I have not seen in years. There were some tags in the jewelry as well. One costume necklace was labeled “Lourdes, 1980, Hawaii.” Looking at my sister, she then remembered that this was the jade necklace she had bought for my mom when she went to Hawaii in 1980.

There were other jewelry there as well and one that held my attention was the sterling silver jewelry that was held in a zip lock bag. They seemed old, a bit tarnished but otherwise, they were fine. As we stared into it, we heard a voice say “That’s your grandmothers...” It was my mom. She sat down and asked us to bring the silver jewelry to her. “This is my mom’s jewelry. Throughout the years when she was still alive, she would give me a piece of her sterling silver collection—just in case for emergency purposes. I never got a chance to use it so most of it is still there. Use it when you need to use it.” She got up and left. Interesting things you can find in mom’s jewelry.
