Vinyl Umbrellas are one of several types of commercial umbrellas that offer an attractive balance of price and product performance. These umbrellas are made of a vinyl fabric that usually features a two or three ply nylon scrim reinforcement between the layers. The thickness of these layers will provide protection from both the sun and the rain. The vinyl fabric has several roles to fulfill when protecting people from the sun. It must offer excellent UV protection and screen the sun’s heat and the sun’s rays from the users. The vinyl fabric also prevents water penetration during rain sessions. The fabric can also be fabricated in different shapes, sizes, and colors.

Typical Vinyl Umbrellas are approximately 7 1/2 feet in diameter and mounted on a 1 1/2 inch aluminum pole with a tilt mechanism. The umbrella itself will weigh about ten pounds. The umbrella unit usually will have a crank for folding the umbrella when it is not in use or being transported. The most common colors are green, red, white, yellow, Kelly green, cream, and royal blue. Screen printing is also available for company names and company logos at an additional fee.

What are the qualities one should look for in commercial Vinyl Umbrellas? First, they should be durable and able to withstand the elements. They must be able to withstand years of sun exposure without degradation. And they must be able to survive strong winds and rain. If they are not built to survive these forces then the umbrella will have a short lifespan. Second, these umbrellas should be functional. A decorative umbrella can be pretty, but it must also perform the job that was intended. Buyers expect the umbrella to shield them from 100 of the direct rain, not 80 or 90 . Umbrellas that leak are not functional. Umbrellas are also expected to provide protection from the sun’s heat and damaging rays. If they are not providing protection from the sun then they are not functional. Third, these umbrellas should be attractive and stylish. Most manufacturers will offer buyers several design or shape options such as circular or hexagon. Different colors can be used to create different patterns. Company logos or company names can be incorporated into the final design. And there is a range of different structures that the buyer can choose from including center mounted, cantilevered, retractable, and portable. Fourth, Vinyl Umbrellas should be cost effective. They are very cost effective when compared to more permanent structures such as gazebos or huts. These umbrellas are certainly more flexible because they are portable and collapsible and can be used indoors or outdoors.

All umbrellas, including Vinyl Umbrellas, share a long and interesting history. Brolliology is the study of umbrellas. Umbrellas have also been called brollys, parasols, bumbershoots, bumbersolls, and other names in history. The umbrella is one of the oldest items found in man s ancient history. It existed in one form or another before the written letter. And it existed in different cultures in different parts of the world. Assyrian kings had their heads shaded by servants holding long handled parasols. The Greeks embraced the umbrella and it was used in their parades and festivals. The Greeks associated the umbrella as a symbol of productivity and sexual aggression. The Romans also embraced the umbrella during their rule. Portuguese seaman used the umbrella as a symbol of authority by opening it over the head of their superior officers when encountering new cultures. They also gave the umbrella as a gift to native royalty in new cultures. The umbrella was eventually brought to the English and popularized by a man name John Hanway. For a time the umbrella was called a Hanway. John Hanway would walk the streets of London with his umbrella, which was considered strange or offensive by many. The coachmen of the time resented him because they feared the popularity of the Hanway would reduce their taxi business. The religious right declared the umbrella immoral because it was shielding people from the heavenly rain. They felt the heavenly rain s purpose was to make people wet. Others saw the umbrella as a feminine article to be used only by women. Any man seen using an umbrella was considered effeminate or worse. But the umbrella had arrived and the English began making improvements and finding new uses. The orators of the time saw the protective value of the umbrella and used it to shield themselves from all forms of thrown objects such as tomatoes and rotten eggs. The delicate parasol was developed and young maidens made it part of their wardrobe. And umbrellas and parasols made frequent appearances in paintings by Degas, Monet, Goya, Delacroix, Seurat, and Renoir.
