When you first try to ship something with a courier company, most of the time the first thing they are going to ask you is if you want to sign up for an account with them. PA courier services may require that you open an account before you ship with them. There are couriers though, that won't require this, and will allow you to ship without having to open an account beforehand. However, there are several reasons why this might not be the best option, and why you might want to think about opening an account anyway.

The companies that will let you ship without opening an account are going to have other requirements of you before you can ship with them. Usually, the most important of these is that you are going to have to pay for any shipments up front before the courier will move anything. When you have an account, this isn't the case. You usually just have to put in an order for your shipment, and the courier will then bill you according to whatever your billing agreement is.

There are reasons for choosing to open an account that are valuable beyond just not having to pay for your shipments up front. The largest of these to most people is access to the host of other features and services which are available to account holders. Many of these are accessible through the company's website.

Some of these features include being able to indicate your wishes to the courier either online on the web or through email. For instance, account holders might have the ability to place an order online. They might also have access to things like an online address book with address verification so they can easily print accurate shipping labels and store all of their clients' addresses conveniently within the courier system.

For some companies though, there is no real practicality to opening a courier account, and it is important to take that into account as well. If you only ship once every several months, it is probably not worth opening an account at this time. If your shipping needs increase over time you can look into opening an account later. You can use your more sporadic shipping needs to test out several of the courier companies in the area. You can compare the rates that they can offer you, as well as the customer service they provide.
