If shooting outside or in an area that is bathed with outdoor lighting, confirm whether or not flash on the subject is appropriate. You want to turn it off if it is bathed in bright sunlight or other really bright conditions. Turn the flash back on when in heavy shadow or darker areas.
Don't just rely on straight on flash from your camera for your shots. That only guarantees a burst of frontal lighting. Get a little more creative and try to create soft lighting conditions. How do you do that with flash, you ask? You can do that by bouncing your flash off of a wall or ceiling.
Make sure that the lighting is right to capture your photo. If you have not enough light, you will not be able to see the images clearly, and if you have to much light, you will run into the problem of your pictures being to bright. Always double check that your flash is on.
Invest in a side mount flash. A flash mounted off to the side is going to provide a much more natural looking source of light for your photos than one directly above your lens.
The number one lighting to avoid in photography is the use of your built in camera flash. Using the flash setting in your camera actually creates the dreaded red eyes and makes your subjects appear featureless shadow blobs. Only use this setting in the case of an emergency if you are left with no other choice.
Do not use the flash on a camera unless you are in a darker location. Using a flash outdoors in a location that already has a lot of light will just make your picture come out too bright. Some cameras have an automatic flash setting so that your camera knows when the flash is needed.
If you are going to take pictures at nighttime, be sure to have a plan. You must know what settings on your camera are most appropriate for night pictures. Also, beware that even with the flash on, certain pictures may not come out if it is dark outside. Be sure to check the picture and make sure that you have taken a good one.
To get an interesting photograph, play around with the lighting. If the natural lighting is not perfect, do not feel the need to resort to your camera's flash. Play with the shadows on the scene, or move your subject into the light and let the darkness eliminate the background behind them. There are many ways to play with light that might initially seem less than favorable but work out well in the end.
If you're trying to take a picture of an object at a distance, don't bother with your camera's flash. You'll be lucky if it travels across 10 feet. However, 5 feet is more realistic. If the subject is further away, that the flash becomes a waste of battery power instead of being useful.
An important tip to consider with photography is the fact that you will want to avoid the flash that is built into your camera if at all possible. The reason for this is that the purpose of the built in flash is to illuminate your subjects, however it often does it in such a harsh nature that your images do not look professional. Use an external flash with a diffuser instead.
Fill Flash.
Although you probably don't believe you need to have a flash when taking pictures outdoors, you would be wise to have one. Bright sunlight can create harsh, dark shadows on your subjects' faces. If your camera flash has a "fill" setting, select it. A fill flash will lighten all of the dark shadows caused by the sun, especially shadows around your subjects' facial features.
