The history of strollers goes way back to the year 1733, when a man named William Kent was asked by the then Duke of Devonshire, to come up with some form of transport for his two small children. Kent, better acknowledged for his innovative abilities as a gardener, created a baby carriage in the shape of a shell for the two royal children. A harness was attached to the carriage, the whole idea being that it could be pulled together by a small pet, such as a goat or a dog, for instance.

News of the baby carriage spread quickly among the wealthy, and soon many of them were ordering the same type of transportation for their own children. empress Victoria herself ordered three of these strollers, which made them even more of a status symbol with the wealthiest of the wealthy. Although beautifully intended, the carriages, because they were so high up, were not safe for babies at all.

Thanks to Richardson, the Stroller Became a Lot Safer

A safer, more purposeful stroller was created in 1889 by a man termed William H Richardson, and it is some of the changes that he made to his design, that are still becoming used today. In his design, the bassinette part of the carriage could be changed to either face the particular person pushing the carriage, or turned around to face ahead. Richardson's carriage also had wheels that could move independently - another part of his design that is still being used in the strollers of These days.

Then, when world War II was returning to an end in 1920, the baby boom that followed, as well as improvements in the economy, brought in a new and bigger requirement for the baby strollers. Just about every family had a baby stroller this time, except for the really poor, who were still unable to afford one.

Inexpensive for Everyone

The history of strollers continued to change, with more and more security features bearriving added to the original design. The carriages where deeper, they now had brakes, the wheels were larger, and the frames were lower and more long lasting. Wicker and wooden frames were also by this time, being replaced with plastic and rubber. By the 1950s, a baby carriage, rather than an image of wealth, was now an economical requirement for every family.

Wide Variety of designs available to Suit All desires

These days, every type of stroller imaginable is readily available on the market, even one to suit those parents who are into jogging on a regular basis. Phil Baechler invented the first baby jogger in 1980, while out on a run with his baby son sitting in a normal stroller. He found out soon adequate, how difficult it was to push his small son in the stroller while he was jogging, and decided to develop a stroller that would be more comfortable, and easier to handle while jogging. immediately after much demo and error, he came up with a three-wheeled stroller that worked completely, and the baby jogger was born.

When the history of strollers first began in 1733, it was only the rich families who could afford this necessary item. These days, with the many distinct styles on the market, and costs to suit all budgets, it is possible for every new parent to afford to purchase a stroller that suits their specific demands, perfectly.
