Whether male or female, our appearance plays a huge role in how the world perceives us. It can determine whether or not we are successful in a job interview, or whether the object of our affection agrees or doesn't agree to a date. We use clothes to express who we are as individuals and to set ourselves apart from 'the crowd'.
So it can be of no surprise that many people put so much consideration into their appearance. However, many place little or no importance on matching their clothes to their eye colour and skin tone. The simple fact is that ensuring that your clothes work in harmony with your colouring is essential if you want to look your best. Whatever your style preference happens to be, why spend lots of time and money perfecting your look, only to end up looking washed out because you didn't bother to coordinate?
1. Be honest
Try on different clothes and be honest about which colours suit you and which you should avoid. Pick out the colours you tend to wear, get yourself to the nearest mirror and start from there. Check out your skin, does it look bright and healthy or pale and washed out? Which colours make your eyes stand out? As you begin to pay more attention to the colours you wear and how they make you look, you'll naturally begin to identify the colours that suit you and those that don't.
2. What's your general colouring?
Are you fair, olive or dark-skinned? People with fair skin and light coloured eyes should stick to cool colours like greys and blues to avoid looking washed out. Muted, earthy tones such as reds and browns tend to flatter those with brown eyes and olive colouring. If you have dark er skin tones then you're extremely lucky, because pretty much any colour will complement your skin tone.
3. Don't be afraid to experiment
Never be afraid to play around and try on colours that you wouldn't usually go for. You might just be surprised at what works.
4. If in doubt, stick to the classics
If ever you're unsure, then you can't go wrong with the classics. Different shades of basic colours like black, blue, white and grey are practical, timeless and complement all types of skin tones and eye colouring.
5. Go with your instinct
The colours that you wear can make or break an entire look. However, never forget that ultimately you're the expert. If you feel good then more often than not you'll look good.
So whilst it's useful to keep these guidelines in mind, the most important thing to remember is that fashion should be fun - a way to look your best and represent the individual that only you can be.
