Time is an integral element to the nature of most weight-related health conditions. This is a fancy way of saying that the bad symptoms don't start showing up right away--they take a while to become apparent. Of course, particularly in the case of childhood obesity, early years of the condition can set things in motion for problems later on. Even so, children will tend to have fewer medical problems due to obesity because they are young. But, the very condition itself is referred to as being a risk factor for later complications and disease conditions. Stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and liver disease are some of the worse problems you can face.

The obese child is on a devastating path toward serious health issues. To use one example: fatty liver disease--just about the top disease that affects a person's liver. A long time ago people typically associated liver problems with liver sclerosis and alcoholism. Today, though, we understand that fatty liver disease is most often caused by chronic obesity. What will usually make the primary liver issues worse is that the metabolism of an obese person is terribly dysfunctional. The liver helps by getting rid of anything that is not good for the body. This puts an intense demand and weight upon the rest of the body's systems in kids who are obese. Young girls who have gotten past puberty are also at risk for gender specific obesity-related issues. For example, menstrual irregularities are not unusual in obese girls and women. This issue is caused by the interference of the female body's ability to produce normal hormones. This then wreaks havoc on the girl or woman's menstrual cycle. The obese condition can cause women to become predisposed to these kinds of problems. Another common result of female obesity is, if the hormonal interference is big, the woman can become sterile. Think about it: if there is a disruption in the hormones, what kind of impact can this have on the other female processes that are reliant upon hormones? Your body needs hormone production to be predictable and healthy so that your metabolism can also function healthfully and within a normal manner.

As you can guess, there is enormous social stigma attached to the obese child and teen. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of unbearable. The effects of prolonged teasing, hurtful comments and bullying can cause psychological scars that can be damaging for a person's whole life. Each person will react in his or her own way to this. It is important to get counseling to deal with the ripple effect that is brought on by these kinds of behaviors.

If you are a child or young adult, it is incredibly important that you find a competent and qualified adult to talk to about your condition. It is likely that you need some education as to the causes of your condition. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health.
