The search for the next best thing to wear out and about is always going to be a mixture of inspiration and perspiration. The desire to find and buy an original garment is paramount and the search has to start with research. Going to your local mall or town centre is probably not going to help much because the clothes that you find there are the same clothes that everyone else as access to. So what to do and how to do it in the shortest amount of time?
The very first thing to realise is that what is available is not always available in the UK. The next stop after rejecting the high street has to be the internet. Problem being though, the internet displays items from all over the world and not all of them are available in the UK.
So, one might assume then that only searching through UK sites will be a good thing. However these are the same sites that everyone else in the UK has access to. No, the best thing is to search the web for the item that you want and then use that item's exact description on UK based sites only and this will give you a selection of websites, in the UK, that stock your chosen garment.
Inspiration is a commodity that we cannot buy but have to wait to strike. We can help it along though; Google image search is one that I use in the early stages of any inspirational search. If you know the streetwear community very well, then maybe there are sites that you know of that will expand the base of your creative search. Be as wider-cast with your net as possible. Once something catches your eye then the work starts. Find out all you can from wherever you see the item that you like - name, brand, colour, style etc. and armed with this knowledge on we go.
Next we search for the item specifically by name and brand and colour. By entering a very detailed description of what you are looking for you allow for the search engines to return some very specific results. Assuming that this search does indeed return online shopping results that you need we have to glean a bit more information. Now it would great if you could find out the manufacturer's item ID or an 'SKU' code. The SKU code is a unique number that is (or should be) linked just to the item that you are after.
So in the final step then we are going to do a very specific search for the latest details that we have now gathered. Now return to the Google search page and enter the following search term - site:*.co.uk "item description in full or SKU code or manufacturers item number".
Let us just take a look at that search term.
'site:' - this is a special Google term that says - please search for a website that has the following things in it.
'*.co.uk' - The star or asterix is called a wild card. This tells Google to search for anything in place of the star - so in this case it is saying ONLY search sites that end in .co.uk but search all websites ending in .co.uk (which for the majority of time are based in the UK)
Next there is a space this is very important - not 2 spaces or no spaces but just one space
"item description in full or SKU code or manufacturers item number" - by putting all the information that you have gained so far, about your item, in " " you tell Google to look for everything between the " and the " as one complete item. This is so it doesn't search for just the first word that you might type in.
This will then return some very specific results. Open the first 5 in new tabs on your browser and check that they have the piece of clothing that you are looking for. Close any tabs that are not showing what you want until you have 3 to 10 options open in separate tabs. If money is an issue you can now look for the cheapest place to get what you are looking for. Don't forget to look at delivery costs too.
The final check is to see if the item is actually available from a UK distribution centre - this you can do by checking the company address, the delivery times (a UK dispatch should be with you in 2 to 5 days) and finally that the price is in £'s.
Order the item and await the delivery of a brand new piece of street-worthy clothing that hopefully is different, cool and exactly what you wanted.
