Prepare your garden bed in the fall for spring planting with this simple method. Lay down several layers of newspaper where you plan to grow your garden, wetting it down as you go. Cover the newspaper with thick black plastic, making sure the edges are secured so it doesn't fly away. In the spring, remove the plastic and plant seeds right through the newspaper and into the soil.

When starting to seed you can use empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls rather than buying expensive trays from the store. The tubes can be cut into smaller pieces and placed directly into the ground because they are biodegradable and will just disintegrate over time. This is a simple way to insure no damage is done to the root system as well.

Winter season does not mean that a gardener can't grow beautiful and delicious herbs. Many cool-weather herbs can be grown if placed in a sunny location of the garden. Try growing favorite herbs that do well in colder months of winter like basil, sage, dill, cilantro, borage, catnip and many varieties of mint.

Start your plants from cuttings to save loads of money! Plants are expensive these days. Many, however, can be started by taking clippings from other plants. All that's required for some is just putting the cut ends in a glass of water. For the more difficult species, just dip the ends in some rooting hormone and push them into some damp sand.

Find out what USDA Zone you live in so you can pick the proper plants for growing in your area. Make a diagram of what you intend to plant and take time choosing the right spot for your garden. A little planning beforehand will save you time, money, and frustration.

To save on energy, cost, and resources, don't plant more of a crop in your garden than you are able to use. If you're not planning on selling your crops at a market, planting more than you can use will just end up wasting resources and space in your garden. If you have extra space, look into planting a variety of crops instead.

Go green and try to conserve as much water as possible in your garden. One way to do this is to take the water from steaming or boiling vegetables and water your plants with it. The enriched water also has the benefit of acting as a fertilizer and will give your plants a boost.

Grow a herb garden. You can buy packaged herbs, but it's much more economical to grow your own. Grow them where they are easy to pick, such as in a garden bed near your back door, in pots on the patio, or in a kitchen window box. Herbs require plenty of sun and good soil. Moisture requirements depend on the variety of herb. Herbs that are easy to grow include chives, parsley, sweet basil, sage, thyme and rosemary.

This article makes it easier for you to understand what you need to do to help your plants grow, and by following the above tips you have a very good starting place.
