If the patient you are looking after has Alzheimer's then it can be very difficult for you as a carer. To make it better for the both of you though, here are some ideas that have been proven to work.

Making a familiar and considered schedule is a good place to start. This routine can help both of you. It is important to consider the time of day you do tasks which take a long time, it is best to place these when they will be at their most agreeable.

Take each task one step at a time. If you try to press on too quickly it will end up as a disaster.

Consider how long it takes your patient to do certain tasks and schedule according to them, not to you.

If they are able to do something by themselves then let them do it - this will make a big difference.

Limit their choices to simple ones. You might be able to handle a big choice, but it is bet to limit their choices between two things.

Turn off the TV or radio or Internet or whatever else might be distracting for the loved one. They probably still love to talk and so having a conversation with you is probably a highlight of the day for them.

Don't get stressed if their needs suddenly change. Adjust the menu if he or she suddenly decides she doesn't like a "favorite" meal anymore. If it seems that they are now calmer in the evenings and agitated in the mornings, then change the schedule accordingly. You also need that flexibility with regards to getting everything done - it doesn't matter if you don't..

Consider the patient's safety and make sure there isn't any unnecessary trip hazards. If there is a room that you don't want them going in by themselves, then make sure you put a lock on it. Checking the stoves are turned off and the heaters won't get too hot are also important considerations for when you are not their. Also check that the first kit has everything it needs and that the fire/smoke alarm is working properly.

As we have mentioned before though, flexibility is necessary, but not when it comes to safety. If they get upset that they can't listen to their favorite radio program anymore, then alter your schedule to include it.

If you can't cope by yourself then speak to someone about it, learning how you can help Alzheimer's sufferers is important for both of you to find a kind of peace.
