Just as spice adds flavor to food, color is the added punch that brings home decorating together and makes all of your eclectic pieces work as a harmonious whole. These home decor tips can help you transform your living room, bedroom, kitchen and nursery to change with the seasons or to celebrate the holidays - all without spending a lot of money.

Start in Neutral

Neutral doesn't have to be boring. Get to know neutral color palettes - colors at the darker and lighter ends of the spectrum, such as brown, black, tan, ecru, gray and various shades of white. The most essential quality of a neutral color is that it coordinates with nearly any other color on the color wheel. Whether you start with deep, rich gray and white or black and tan, you've got a base palette on which you can create your home decor magic.

Create a Theme

The second step in decorating your home is to establish a theme. Working within a theme allows you to bring together all sorts of interesting objects, furniture and artwork to create a singular look. If you choose to decorate with Western decor, for example, you can scatter Navajo-inspired throws and dream catchers, cowboy sculptures or wooden plaques that have a Western theme. If you've started with a neutral theme, you can easily swap out some accessories when the holidays roll around and create a holiday room theme, or lighten it up in the summer with sun-splashed colors and accessories.

Cater to the Senses

Most people think of the visual when they consider home decor. In reality, it is much, much more. Incense and scented candles appeal to olfactory senses and can fit in with your theme. Choose scented candles that play off the colors you've chosen to accent your room, and try to match the scent to the mood your decor creates. Wind chimes and water features add sound as well as color to your home decorating efforts and help create the feel you desire.

Carryover Room to Room

It can be jarring to the senses and make things feel disconnected when colors change abruptly from one room to the next. You don't have to paint every room the same color, but try to keep the hue and color quality in the same range of intensity. Carry a single color through all of your rooms, or at least in rooms that are adjacent to each other. If you use an intense blue as a major accent color in your living room, for example, choose a few accent items in the same color for the dining room to create continuity, then take a color from the dining room and use it as an accent color in the kitchen.

Find a Home Decorators Outlet

Remember not to fall into the trap of paying full price for your home decor items. Professional interior decorators shop at home decorators' outlets where they can find high-quality artwork, furniture, room accents and accessories at wholesale prices. You'll find everything you need to bring color and style to your home - at a fraction of the cost that your neighbors pay.
