The health-conscious in India gives much importance to nashta or healthy breakfast. It is vital that you learn the Indian cuisine so you can make informed decisions on your diet. A typical day of a North Indian local starts with a coffee or tea, vegetable dish, roti, curd, and achar or pickles. In western India people prefer milk and Dhoka, while the southern people prefer dosas, idlis, and various chutneys. Going to a culinary school will help you understand Indian cuisine better.

Indian Cuisine and Eating Habits.

Aside from having a hearty breakfast, the local people prepare healthy lunch and dinner. The main dish is served with rice and vegetables. During lunch, the main dish is accompanied by parathas, kulcha, or nan. Sweets are also included to aid in digestion. The main meal is served at dinner time. It is vital that the whole family is gathered and the meals are served with desserts such as gulab and kheer.

The cooking method and taste of this cuisine is hard to ignore. The traditional cuisine is a blend of ages and various cultures. Different civilizations have also influenced the local cuisine but one thing remains the same - the spiciness of foods. Whether you live in the north or south of India, foods are usually rich in spices.

Regional Indian Cuisine.

In the northern part of the country, you will notice the influence of central Asia in the Indian cuisine. The valleys in these regions are abundant with rice, so most of the main meals are served with rice. Some of the delicious foods served in these areas include Saag. The Chapatis is also considered as staple food, together with Rumaali, Tandoori, Naan, and many others.

The western Indian cuisine has a unique taste and since fresh veggies are scarce, pickle preserves or achars are served as substitutes. In other western areas, the foods are a mixture of the south and north cooking styles. Like northern India, wheat and rice is also quite popular. Some of the famous foods in these areas are egg molie, duck baffad, Vindaloo, and sorpotel.

The southern Indian cuisine uses coconuts, fishes, and spices for their foods. This is because of the coastal kitchens, but the region also serves lamb stew, Idlis, dosas, rice puttu, and fried prawns.

The eastern Indian cuisine is influenced by Assamese and Bengali cooking styles. The people in this region love the combination of fish and rice. If you love sweets, you should try Cham-cham, Sandesh, and Roshogollas.

Trying the Indian Cuisine.

Regardless of your nationality, you will love the local cuisine of the Indians. Vegetarians are found mostly in the southern area of the country. Hindus also consider eating beef as taboo because of their belief in the holy cow. In the northern area, most people prefer meat and follow the central Asia or Middle East style of cooking. Indians make use of lots of spices to give their dishes different flavors. Basic dishes are made from pork, lamb, chicken, meat, and fish which can be turned into curries. Try something different today and experiment on the Indian cuisine.
