Children born with the congenital birth defect, microtia may have such minor birth defect(s) as atresia ear. Children with the minor birth defect levels of microtia may have hearing loss corrected more effectively by simply imbedding a modern hearing aid under the skin so that the child can use their ear canal and other inner ear parts through the use of a hearing aid. Because of technology developments of hearing aids, hearing loss can be greatly improved in microtia and atresia ear patients without surgery. Sometimes children can have both microtia surgery and hearing aids to improve hearing loss. The choice, of course, is up to the children, their parents, and their doctors to decide if surgery or a hearing aid, or both would be most effective and less intrusive in correcting the congenital ear deformity of atresia ear and hearing loss caused by microtia.

To repair microtia hearing loss with a simply imbedding a hearing aid over the ear canal or performing surgery or both surgery and hearing aid to repair microtia in a child patient would also be determined by what other birth defect(s), if any, that the child has. Micortia is a common birth defect or congenital ear deformity in children with other birth defect(s) such as hemifacial microsomia, Treacher-Collins Syndrome, and/or Goldenhar Syndrome. (Microtia and atresia ear hearing loss can also occur many times as an isolated birth defect case where the child only has microtia and no other birth defect.)

The corrective surgery for microtia children patients who have atresia ear may be that the surgeon simply make an opening in the external ear tissues where a natural opening should have been to the ear canal. This surgery would correct hearing loss. In this microtia surgery, a surgeon must be sure that the child's skin doesn't grow back over the opening to the ear canal. So, while the child heals from the microtia surgery, the surgeon must put something inside the new opening so that the child's skin doesn't over correct the healing process and the skin grow back over the newly formed ear opening of the microtia reparation surgery.

Since atresia ear is a common birth defect among the more mild cases of microtia meaning that the skin of the external ear is the only thing blocking the ear canal and creating hearing loss, surgery may not be the best option. In this case, atresia ear and microtia hearing loss can be repaired by simply imbedding a modern hearing aid under the skin.

This would repair the hearing loss and be much less intrusive than a microtia reparation surgery. Repairing atresia ear and microtia hearing loss with a hearing aid may also be a more healthy choice for the child rather than creating a hole to the ear canal that wouldn't have the normal protective tissues that a regular external ear would have such as tiny hairs and ear wax to keep dirt from getting into the ear canal. Again, every case of microtia and atresia ear is different and unique to the child born with the congenital ear deformity and an informative discussion should occur between the children, their parents, and the doctor/surgeons who are making the decision of how to repair microtia caused hearing loss.
