For years, my younger sister has been nagging me about my routine and my lack of interest in anything outside of work. She’s always trying to lure me to go with her on her shopping sprees or spa appointments. I constantly hear her mentioning brand names or phrases I don’t care for, like speedy totes, collagen therapy or essential oils.

I am low maintenance. Or at least I consider myself less girly than most women I know. Compared to my younger sister, I would look like a boy. Don’t get me wrong. I am no tomboy. I know how to apply my own make up, or handle a hair dryer, it’s just that I am always in a rush, and don’t feel the need to be all dolled up every time I step out of my apartment.
When I wake up, I brush my teeth, hit the shower, run a comb through my shoulder length hair while picking out a suitable work outfit, and then head to my office. Breakfast is always at work.

It took me seven years to realize that I’ve become a typical workaholic, clocking in twelve to fifteen hours, five to six days a week. I recognized this after a couple of trips to the emergency room this year. On my first trip to the hospital, I discovered for the first time that I have asthma. It was a surprise because I never had any previous attacks until then. None of my family members have asthma. My second trip to the emergency room was due to high blood pressure. After a couple of weeks monitoring my blood pressure, I was diagnosed with hypertension. I beat my mom to the disease and I am only in my late twenties.

I did some research on de stressing because I felt that my body shouldn’t be showing signs of neglect this early. I came across many articles on positive thinking, slow breathing, exercise, diet and massage therapy. And then I recalled the essential oils my sister would always refer to. I gave her my go signal to book an appointment for us at the local spa.
We were served with drinks as soon as we arrived at the spa. I went through the list of services offered and selected aromatherapy and essential oils. I randomly selected a lavender essential oil for my treatment. It turned out to be the perfect choice because I learned later on that lavender essential oil is used to cure asthma, hypertension and stress.
The treatment was wonderful. My masseuse expertly used slow, rhythmic strokes on me. The calm music, candle lights and the sweet aroma of the lavender essential oil made it so peaceful that I had to consciously make an effort to stay awake. I wanted to savor the occasion and not fall asleep through the entire session.

Overall, it was a great experience. Not only did I discover a new healing therapy to include in my routine, I also finally found an excellent way to bond with my sister. This is now something that we do together on a regular basis. Who would have thought these essential oils would cure more than bodily ailments?
