Learning to read faster has many advantages and it's definitely a skill everyone should learn. While 250 words/minute is about average, speed readers can read at considerably faster rates. There are people who can easily read over one thousand words per minute and some who can read a few thousand words in the same time frame. This might sound out of reach to you right now, but if you learn the right techniques, you too can be a speed reader. The tips in this article should prove useful in getting you started on your journey to master the skill of speed reading.

If you're trying to become a speed reader, it makes sense to first measure your present reading speed. If you want to know how well your speed reading attempts are going, you need to know your current, 'normal' reading speed. You can find out your reading speed in a few minutes, either by timing yourself or by doing an online search and finding a site that has tests that time you. Setting a timer to go off in 3 minutes is a simple way to time your reading speed; use a book that the average adult might read for your test. Try to read at a natural but swift pace, with the aim to understand the material and when the time goes off stop immediately. Count the number of words you read and figure out your rate per minute. Two hundred wpm is fairly typical, but your own rate might be faster or slower.

Very often, people don't read as efficiently as they could because of where and how they're reading. When you think about your reading speed, you're probably not thinking about reading for pleasure, but about material you need to learn. So even before you start reading, you should make sure that the conditions are appropriate for concentrating. This means reading in a quiet room so you can focus on the material you are reading, having adequate lighting and making sure you are sitting upright in a chair with good back support. We all like to read in bed but if you truly want to increase your reading speed then you will have to do it sitting upright because this helps you focus better on the material you are reading.

Your index finger can be an effective tool to make you a faster reader. Kids often learn to read this way, which makes many people think it's something they should outgrow. You can actually improve your reading speed and comprehension quite a bit by doing this. You will find it simpler to move from one sentence to the next this way, and you'll be less tempted to reread what you've already taken in. Your eyes will unconsciously follow at the same speed as your finger and you can train yourself to read faster by simply moving your finger faster.

If you want to be able to learn more information in less time, it's worth it to master the art of speed reading. This is not a mysterious or difficult skill, but one anyone can learn if they're willing to apply themselves to it.
