It is an unfortunate fact for millions of people worldwide that there is no cure for psoriasis currently available on the market. The reason we still have no cure for this unsightly skin disease, is because we simply don't understand enough about why it occurs in the first place. Although it is thought to have its origins from an immune system problem, precisely what is causing this problem still remains a mystery to medical science.

In place of a cure for psoriasis, we are left with certain treatments. The difference between a cure and a treatment is that a cure actually targets the root cause of a problem, whilst a treatment simply addresses the visible symptoms of it. With psoriasis, these treatments often come in the form of skin creams, which will help to soothe the inflamed and itchy skin that is characteristic of psoriasis symptoms. The more effective of these topical skin treatments are only available on prescription usually, and they also do come with some unwanted side effects.

Because of this lack of an effective cure from the medical world, many sufferers of psoriasis turn to alternative remedies instead. Although such alternative therapies do not come backed up by data from medical trials to prove they are effective, there are a growing number of folks who swear by them. When it comes to psoriasis, one such school of thought would suggest adopting an ayurvedic approach to dealing with the disease.

Ayurvedic medicine is a school of alternative therapy that dates dates back to ancient India, and where psoriasis is concerned many of its teachings still ring true today. Ayurvedic medicine tends to take a holistic approach to the treatment of psoriasis, as well as other conditions too. This means examining how multiple facets of our live are culminating in us suffering from a disease such as this.

Although many of the ayurvedic psoriasis treatments practised thousands of years ago would seem primitive to us today, they do bear the hallmarks of what many alternative treatment specialists would advise today. For example, ancient ayurvedic medicine would advise a psoriasis sufferer to cleanse their skin from within, which would be carried out through inducing vomiting in the patient. Although this might not sound like a good idea today, it was used to benefit the patient in the same way a good body detox program would today.

Modern chemical based skin treatments can have an adverse effect on the condition of the skin, and many people with psoriasis will benefit from using natural topical skin treatments instead. Such products owe their existence to the ancient practises used to tackle problems like psoriasis. The old way of creating a herbal concoction of your own to soothe your skin was the equivalent of buying skin care products containing natural ingredients like Aloe Vera and coal tar.

Although medical science has moved away from traditional treatments, it does not mean they cannot still play a part in our healthy lives. When science fails to come up with a cure for a condition, such as is the case with psoriasis, there is much to be gained from medical practises that many have forgotten.
