Grape Nehi
These days, the old Nehi Soda company is best known for Grape Nehi, the favorite soda of MASH's Radar O'Reilly. In the company's heyday, though, grape was only one of 22 flavors that Nehi sold. Its other flavors included Blue Ice Cream, Chocolate and Berks County Root Beer. Nehi takes a special place among nostalgic sodas when it comes to celebrity endorsements. Among the celebrities who drank Nehi soda were Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, and Hedy Lamar. Today, you can buy Grape Nehi and Peach Nehi from retro soda sellers.
Kickapoo Joy Juice
Say what? Lil Abner fans will remember Kickapoo Joy Juice as the high-test beverage brewed by Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe. However, not many people remember that it is also a high-powered lemon-lime citrus soft drink introduced by The Monarch Beverage Company in 1965, at the height of the Al Capp comic strip's popularity. The company struck a licensing deal with Capp that included control over marketing. As a result, Kickapoo Joy Juice still carries a hillbilly cartoon sketch on the can. It's a popular carbonated beverage in Asia, but more difficult to find in the U.S. However, you can have it delivered along with dozens of other brands and flavors of soda.
Moxie Original Elixir
You'll still find Moxie in supermarkets around the country, but it's slipped into obscurity since its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s. The Moxie Company holds the distinction of being one of the very first carbonated soft drinks bottled for mass consumption. It was endorsed by Red Sox slugger Ted Williams and numbered President Calvin Coolidge among its many fans. While many people think of it as one of the better-known nostalgic sodas, in Maine it has a different title - the state's Official Soft Drink.
Nesbitt's Honey Lemonade
Nesbitt's was once a big name in the soft drink industry. The company was founded in 1924 as the Nesbitt Fruit Products Company, and originally marketed soda fountain products. In 1938, the company started bottling Nesbitt's Orange Soda, which quickly became the most popular orange soda in the country. The early advertisements for Nesbitt's Orange Soda featured an unknown model and actress named Marilyn Monroe. While its orange soda was renowned, the company also made other flavors of soda, including two that are still marketed today - Nesbitt's Honey Lemonade and Nesbitt's Peach Soda.
