Shortness of breathing had been known as the most common symptom of asthma. This is considered as bronchial asthma as to differ it from cardiac asthma. Cardiac asthma may occur when the patient is lying down and can be relieved if the patient starts to sit down. Cardiac asthma is an asthma symptom that is projected by waking up in the middle of the sleep. The big difference between cardiac asthma to bronchial asthma is that cardiac asthma is related to some heart disease while bronchial asthma is known to show up in allergy.

Bronchial asthma is due to the narrowing of airways, and once the airways are narrowed it will result to small amount of air entering the body. Wheezing is known as a sign of asthma attack, but not all cases indicates that wheezing can be seen prior to an asthma attack. There are cases of asthma that the asthma patient has swollen face, this is due to some allergic reaction, the swelling may hinder the airflow once it affects the larynx. This is how asthma is related to allergy.

The similarities between asthma and allergy do not stop in the airways. They are both triggered by inhaling something that provokes a certain reaction in a person's body. Bronchial asthma triggers include cigarette smoke, vehicle emissions, fumes, and strong odors. Environmental asthma triggers include dust or dust mites, molds, and pollen. Note that the environmental bronchial asthma triggers are all triggers of allergy as well.

Bronchial asthma treatment is usually attained with bronchodilator inhalers. These bronchodilators provide quick-relief for asthma attacks because, as inhalants, the medication reaches the lungs faster. It is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe medications usually meant for allergy. Leukotriene modifiers and mast cell stabilizers are examples of medications generally used for treating allergy.

Despite of the mass availability of treatments and medications for asthma, none of this is considered as cure. Today another breakthrough was unleashed to provide aid to asthma caused by allergens, called immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is the process of exposing the patient to the allergens by injecting the allergens itself to the patient, this a very delicate process, the allergens should be given step by step, in which the amount should follow from minimal to the point that total immunity will be attained. The discovery of immunotherapy is believed to be good sign, which can also lead to the discovery of a cure for asthma.
