Are you looking into scuba diving? If so, get ready for the ride of your life as you learn about scuba equipment and how to use it when you go diving. Most beginners learn early on that specialized gear for different types of dives is necessary and must be mastered. This information is limited, however, to recreational diving as this will apply to most people that begin to learn this sport. As a general rule, people that go on vacation simply rent the equipment that they use. You must understand the devices that you were going to rent in order to fully utilize them while you are diving. Suffice to say, using unfamiliar diving gear is taking a walk on the dangerous side. The more information that you have about SCUBA equipment, the better off you will be in such a situation.

Open circuit scuba diving usually involves the diver wearing one gas, or air, cylinder and all the associated components and devices. Diving with a closed circuit set-up or a rebreather configuration, lasts for a longer period of time than an open circuit diving set-up. The general air combination for many if not all recreational divers is 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Years ago divers that were attired with dual cylinder backpacks were at a higher percentage rate. Still, this doesn't happen as much as the lone cylinder configuration currently. A diving type known as technical diving is where one discovers more twin pack wearing divers.

Air tanks are commonly associated with all scuba divers, and most people understand the purpose. Typically, these air tanks are made of stainless steel; most of the time they are provided in different sizes to fit the various divers that will use them. Depending upon where you are diving, and what you're overall goal is, you will use different types of air tanks. The amount of air that you are able to breathe from each type of cylinder is directly related to how they were made and the material that was used. There are differences between cylinder designations used in the US and Europe. In the United States, for example, when the cylinder has 1 Atm of pressure within it, it is considered full. While in Europe the reference is given in terms of internal volume.

Divers that go very far into the water are known as technical divers. You must always be on your guard diving too deeply as he can be very hazardous for those that do it. Redundant gas systems, along with special mixtures in their oxygen tanks, makes these divers better equipped to handle greater depths. It is commonplace to see pony cylinders attached to divers that do this type of diving. These are actually a completely separate unit having separate mouthpieces, demand regulators, and hoses on each unit. They are completely separate from the main scuba set and exist in case of a malfunction or if they should exhaust their primary gas supplies.

Diving certainly would not be the same, and definitely less safe, without instruments such as the dive computer. Excellent advances have been made with technology and design to make this type of dive gear available. Of all of the pieces of diving equipment and gear that you get, always pay top dollar for this particular item because you really do want it to work properly.
